A friend and I recently noticed this sound coming from the bottom of my ‘95 80 series Land Cruiser. We noticed it a few hours after I accidentally made a tight turn on some pavement after forgetting to disengage 4L, without the lockers engaged, hopping the tires a bit. I’m not 100% it’s related to turning on pavement but it could be:

Some details:
- There is no noticeable drivetrain vibration
- It sometimes seems to vary by speed but not linearly and not always
- It only occurs when under light load or coasting, not while under significant power
- It’s not consistent. Sometimes it will disappear for half of a drive and then return a few minutes later.
- There is no noticeable driveshaft or u joint slop

If you have some ideas on what might be causing it, it would be much appreciated. I’d prefer to have a good starting point rather than just start ripping stuff apart looking for issues.

I reckon its a U-Joint.
unbolt from the drive flanges one end at a time and feel their movement. Whilst bolted in place you cant feel the buggered needle bearings
The 'ting' sound to me sounds like when you tap the tailshafts with a screw-driver
That makes sense. I’ll give it a shot this weekend.

To update: this was correct. Had one bad u joint on front/rear. Once I pulled the driveshafts it was obvious
