Other than preventing children from pressing their faces against the window what is the purpose of these horizontal rods?

I use mine to hang the air freshner from and bungee cord stuff so it doesn't fall out when I open the rear doors

So if I remove them to install a gun rack the window does not fall

Thanks John.....In my neck of the woods the rods may protect the glass but the guns protect the whole vehicle.
