Kliers, you're wrong about '81 being the first year of the 5 speed. I bought a new '79 SR5 2wd longbed with 5 sp..

Good truck but the trans lost the first gear cluster while in warranty - less than 24,000 miles. After they fixed it it was still going good when my first wife took it in divorce seven years later.

That was the first year of the rounded body. Before that looked a lot worse, but I'm pretty sure that the '78 SR5 also had a five speed. That was the reason for the designation. Not sure about any before that.

4x4 came in 1980.

Not wrong on either point, we were talking about trannies on the 4WD models which started in 1979.

The Best Toyota Mini

Now thats a subject for a lot of opinions and dispute. But well if I had all the money in the world, which unfortunately I don't. I would get an 1982 turbo diesel 4x4, 4 door, short box (from Austrialia) and have it shipped over here and then get another 82 from the states cuz I like driving on the left. Still has solid axles. No carb or EFI, diesel, well thats the best mini in my opinion.....but for ease and convience I settled on an 1988 and figured I would do a solid axle swap later, the 1985s were to hard to find in my price range.

so I found a 85 mini for 2500$ It has 150,000k, and 5 speed also a 86 with an a/t how is the a/t compared to the 5 speed for mild wheeling

For mild wheeling, I think the auto would be ok. However, the 86 would be IFS if it's a US truck. Also, the auto uses a different t-case, giving you fewer (and more costly) options if you want to re-gear the t-case.

Does either one have EFI?

the 85 has a carb, I going with the 85 I like the fact I have so many options to up grade when the time comes. thank you for the info

LOL......this old thread came up last night when I was looking for info on mini trucks.......

I am still looking or looking again......its only been 8 years :grinpimp:

I think the pimp has gotten over his desire for a mini by now, but for those of you who dislike the 20R 22r engines, Methinks you may not experienced a properly tuned engine. My 81 <, would cruise at 75 all day on I5 in socal, and while it wasn't a rocket by any means, 20 mpg was good enough for me......
The ride wasn't any worse than either of my pigs (good shocks) and I went a lot of places in that thing that my piggy only dreamed about. It did have a crappy tranny, but the one out of an 84 that I stuck in it was good for over 300k

Also, if you read the thread, the pimp is looking for an EARLY mini, not an 85 or anything newer.

I'm planning on getting a third gen, too. A guy I know is moving. I can't remember what year it is right now. It is square headlight, 22R, 5speed, A/C, 4x4. Runs, smokes a little, needs front axle service. He wants $1300. Is that good?
