I hook up this wire to one of the screws on the sending unit it was the only obvious spot .does this seem right.the gauge does not work before it use to at least move

Yep, it grounds to any one of the 5 screws.

Have you checked the splice in the Yellow-Red wire? If this isn't your splice, I would trace the wire from the sender to the gauge and make sure it's good - or test continuity on it.

You can also pull the sender and test it with an ohm meter... or ohms function on a multimeter.

I don't recall what year FJ40 you have... here's what @Downey says the resistance should be:

(a) Up to 9/72 is 100 ohms empty, 3 ohms full, but with a 7 volt drop built into the Toyota sender.
(b) From 9/72 is 120 ohms empty, 17 ohms full, full 12 volt operation.

Welcome to the forum...when I joined up not so long ago I was soon told to refer to my FJ40 as a 40 - not a FJ so as not to confused with the FJ Cruiser

Cheers

Ah s***, makes sense. I own both (a '72 and a '13) so it would get MEGA confusing for me.

61* here this morning... Fall will be here shortly!!

I can't drive 44 until I'm completely off OxyContin and my vertebrae fuse... About XMas time... So, daBoise and I pretended... We backed her out and let her idle for about 20 minutes, while we sat and admired her and discussed plans for after I am paroled.

Hey Danny, I do believe these are the first pics I've seen of 44's home base. There have been lots of good pics of the surrounding territory, which have been really appreciated. The pic of daboise and the chair sure show boredom. But, dreaming, at the current time, is better than nothing. I've got a chair similar to yours, but it doesn't provide enough back support for me to use it for long term.

Hey, just had a wild idea. How about a few pics of the "wild terrain" that you and daboise walk through? I know, not anywhere near as interesting as the real thing. But better than nothing, and just might keep a few of us from having total withdrawals.

On another note, do you have a way to raise 44's idle speed up just a bit for part of the time during idling? I don't know if it is a problem for gassers, but for diesels a long idle time is supposedly not good for them as the cylinder walls tend to get lubricating oil washed off by the incoming fuel. My pickup is the first year that a computer was used, so it was easy for me to wire in a higher idle speed option. Just a flip of a switch raises the idle to about 1100 RPM.

Hey Don,

Yeah, I raise the idle to 1100 rpm, using my hand throttle. From everything I've read, it's a toss-up... Letting it sit us bad for the carb... Let it idle can sludge it up... So, I let it run at 1100 rpm.

I'm afraid pictures of a city (pavement, sidewalks and houses) would depress everyone.

We are hoping to start taking daBoise to various parks, to walk... I'll get pictures then.

Looks like you have good company, that goes a long way. Bet your wife comes out with a big stick and makes sure your following the Drs. orders.

OH, she knows I will not deviate from HER orders.

I know that's right! lol
Love that step on the side of your 40 man, great idea. Bet that's handy has a shirt pocket. Like the way you have set her up Danny.

Nope it's all PO work.that will be stuff to work on when it cools off a little. and I don't want to start any thing before Cruisin The Coast that starts oct2 plus I have a (working) gauge cluster I bought off if eBay that I need to install. Really the next big job that's needs to be done iz rebuilding the rear end.

Installed my HID fog lights and the OEM fog switch. Ordered the switch new and came without the bezel retaining nut but as luck would have it my source for old bj40 parts had that and another suprise for me. Retainer nut for switch and OEM dash brake light for $4.

Please with the quality of the off brand fog lights compared to the price of rough country's $300 price tag.

Danny in the side picture how much air do you have in your air bags? And what does it look like with out air pressure? My back end site a little lower the The front and I was wondering if it would be a quick fix until I can put a OME suspension on.

IIRC I have 40 psi right now... Could be 50... I change it frequently, depending on the load and to be able to get into the garage.

I run a minimum of about 10 psi, to keep the bags inflated.

50 psi raises the fender wells about 2.5" over 10 psi.

I've never inflated over 50, but you can inflate to ??? Over 100 psi... I don't recall how much.

I wanna be clear... I like my BOSS bags so much, I don't plan on doing anything else with my suspension.

Having said that, I just received an email from cruisercorps.com... They have $100 (ends tomorrow) off on OME suspensions... Still a chunk of change...

My rust bucket parts car is not longer a parts car. I had to deal with some California Smog issues, and take it to the DMV. Below is where it sat waiting for DMV vehicle Inspection. The DMV person walked up and said, "This is not a Toyota, it is a Jeep, you brought me the wrong paperwork." With that said, he completely checked the rivets on the VIN plates to make sure I was not trying to fool him. Passed, and now this East Coast 40 is now a West Coast 40!
