As posted before, if you are not being stupid with how much weight you are towing, the issue become one of length of tongue/towed item, and is the tail wagging the dog given the short wheelbase of the LC.
According to owner's manual for both '79 BJ40 and '83 BJ42:
Trailer weight, plus the cargo you put in the trailer, must not exceed 2500 lb. (1135 kg).
When towing a trailer, you must not exceed the Gross Combination Weight Rating (sum of the vehicle weight and the trailer weight, each fully loaded) as listed below:
Hardtop - less than 7000lb (3175 kg)
Station Wagon - less than 7500 lb (3400 kg)
In addition, never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) listed on the Certification Regulation Plate on the left front body hinge pillar...
Trailer tongue load must not exceed 250 lb (115 kg) with the trailer fully loaded (they also recommend tongue load be 10% of total trialer weight, and they recommend trailers with surge type brakes) They also recommend you do not use 5th gear if you have a 5-speed.
Thanks for all the advice guys. It will probably be a while before I try to tow it, but if I do I'll take the "slow and steady" test run. Might be a good idea to stop by the local scales just so I know exactly what I'm working with.
I'll definitely give an update with how it goes if I do.
It just sucks, I bought the Baja so that the wife and kiddos would like the camping thing a little better, but now I can't bring the 40 to play in. Sure the 80 is fun but there are trails around ere that are a little tight for that brick.
