Cruiser Dan once said that interstate is the stateside factory replacement battery....

I have a Toyota Tru-Start in mine(PO put it in and I bet they arent cheap) I seem to remember someone saying its actually a Panasonic, this is assuming that by replacement you mean not another Toyota Tru-Start right? can anyone verify this, I wasnt able to find it in my searching. In any case, whatever it is, its a good one for normal use. I have the truck at a job site, rear hatch open, on ACC to run the radio and power the lighter outlet to charge my cell phone and can leave it that way for 5 hours at a time and notice nothing when I go to start it. I realize that a cig lighter, stock stereo and interior lights are not too much of a draw like a winch, but I have had batteries that have died on MUCH less.

My understanding was that the only way to get a Panasonic battery to the states was installed in a vehicle, the high weight and hazardous quality of batteries would make them extremely expensive to ship from Japan

My dad whom is a car lover (but not a big mechanic) , was told by someone in the early 90's that Catapiller brand, as in CAT the guys that bring you front-end loaders etc, build a damn good battery and thus we have had them in EVERY damn car we have ever owned once the one that came the the truck failed. For what its worth, we have had them in a 72' GMC Pick-Up, 1971-76-80-85-88 GMC Suburbans, 3 1985 Saab 900's and a 94 9000 and most recently in my 85 FJ60 and they have been nothing but great in the cold and after long periods of draw. I have exactly zero data to back anything up other then YEARS of use. Until recently I did not give alot of thought to car batteries because I have always had good ones and they happened to be CAT's. I am sure they are made by someone else, but they seem to work well. I go to the local heavy equipment CAT dealer, tell him what I am driving, he hands me a big ol' battery and its good from there, IIRC they run about $80 around here.

I have the Optima Blue. It is a combo start/marine battery. You pay $$$ for them though, somewhere in the $180 range. I have a constant draw on my system that I cannot isolate and it was killing batteries about one a year.... This new optima is on 2 years now. About once a month I give her a good three day trickle charge as insurance....

Does the Optima have a bettery for the 80? Or did you make the battery cable longer?
For the extra $$$ you may as well get a second deepcycle battery then you will have a back up.
For some reason we have the odd ball battery with the +treminal (on the left side when facing it).

One bad thing about batterys is when you need one you need it NOW. You don't have time to go and search out one unless you have more than one vehicle that the wife will drive.
For some reason she won't drive the TURD :D ???

The Optima SLA battery (not deep cycle) is the 34R, also known as the Orange Top. Same spec as the Red top, but you will need the spacer or a 2X6 under it to lift it to the proper height. I believe the battery shop will give you the Optima spacer if you ask for it during the battery purchase.

I have my old Panosonic as my second battery. The Optima that I have is a Blue top if I recall it was a 34d? The spirals in it are staggered kind of funny and it ends up being larger then most batteries. My cables may not be original, I have made many mods to my electrical. Probably why I have the battery drain....

I think I know why the battery fails (at least on my 80). My wife puts the seat all the way forword, up and full lumbar.
I move the seat back, down and no lumbar.
THis is done every time before the motor is started. I can't get in after SHE drives it.
I also have young kids. You know what kids do with electric seats!
I am sure that the seats put a load on the battery.
