I've removed the pulley from my old water pump and was cleaning it up before reinstalling it on the new pump when I noticed these. They look like roller bearings from a wheel bearing set. They seem to be stainless steel and seem to be packed in with dirt. One of them popped out and I'm not sure exactly where it was located in the pulley...
Are these weights for this pulley? Doesn't seem necessary.
If they aren't weights what are they and how did they get THERE?

Tack weld is back to its original position, or dont worry about it

But , ................

it seams the water pump pully mount had guide pins on some modles i have Sean ?

sorta like a drift pin U have in your hand

Interesting. I thought they may be some kind of mounting stud. The old pump is definitely not original. Perhaps these got stuck in there while the truck was apart for repairs in the past. Thy don't seem to be welded in there. Just packed with dirt. I just don't want to put it back together if they're suppose to be weights of some sort. I just can't see why that would be though. Confusing...

A PO would never go to the trouble to balance a pully— but Toyota would. I say (guess) those are balance weights. It could be possible (guessing again) that the pully, fan clutch and fan are balanced as an assembly at the factory when the engine is being assembled. Maybe not, but a balanced cooling assembly would make life a lot easier on the water pump bearing.

They're defiantly not in there permanently. They popped right out with a light pry on a screw driver. Covered in mud...

I’m confused... pulley on the water pump? The part that bolts to the fan clutch?
Whoa! Ignore me! Total brain fart moment.

is is a chance they are the Old roller bearings from a previous water pump that broke off shaft ? or empolded , then some got caught up in the pullly groove ?

That was my initial thought, but that's gotta be one hell of a failure for something like that to happen, though not completely out of the question.

Yeah- if it's just mud holding those bearing rollers in the pully groove- I'm stumped. Complete mystery how they got there or why.

Yeah but 4 of them? I was thinking maybe someone had trouble removing the pulley from the oem pump and decided to dissasymble the pump from the back side. When they slid the shaft out maybe the roller bearings fell out and into the pulley. Not sure if they use roller bearings in the water pump. Some day I'll pull my old one apart and look.

Not enough metal in the pulley to balance... before removing the other 3 rollers. Set the pulley on a cone shape static wheel balancer and watch it tilt to the side with the rollers in the groove- I assert they are bearings that were put on the pulley during disassembly in the rain and mud and were subsequently left there , you can verify the pulley is out of balance and feel better about removing them and moving on.
