Just ran across this website (http://www.quoits.info/versions/washers.html) for the rules and building a washer toss game.

Probably shouldn't classify this as survival gear unless you consider it gives the kids something to do and I can have a cerveza at the same time. Come to think of it - it is very much a required item if you have the space.

I built a set last summer, it's a blast!

Mine isn't two long boxes though, it's just a smaller board with front and back supports to get it off the ground and at an angle with a single hole and some padding on the surface. A cup hook in the front edge gives you a place to hook a 20' string to get your distance right. We play 3 points for in the hole, 1 point for on the board, and if you manage to hang one on the hook you win immediately (this has only happened once) I can bring in pics if you want. Mine is way more compact than the one on that site.

Next project, "polish" horseshoes: http://tinyurl.com/rqvxh (example, I'd make it without gluing all the PVC)

Wikerman - please do take some pics and either post or PM me for my email address. Always looking for activities to keep the kids from getting bored.

I grew up in Dallas and the game we played was less complicated, more like Horseshoes. There were two holes, 20 feet apart. The hole was lined with a one pound coffee can (so we couldn't argue that one was bigger).

Each player got three washers (about 3 inches in diameter) painted a distinctive color. Played like horseshoes, each player stands over one hole and tosses to the other. After both sides played, you got a point for each washer closest to the hole and five points for a washer in the hole.

Beer was always involved and everyone had a good time. Not to date myself, but Washers was much better than black and white TV and most folks didn't have air conditioning back then. :-)

Happy Tails! N
