Ahhh so it appears it's very important not to let the bolts spin when tightening!

Can this be fixed? Was thinking of bridging the damaged connection. Is it possible to solder this?
 
Regular rosin core solder would most likely melt under any kind of serious load. Best bet if you choose to solder would be silver solder.
