i am contemplating this winch for my 60 , i like to go on long expedition style trips solo with my family i have been wanting a winch for a while just in case of an emergency where i realy needed one , i was also looking at a used ramsey Rep 8000 for $ 400 the M12000 is $800 .

the M12000 is 136 lbs

the Rep 8000 is 75 lbs

thoughts ?

I was thinking the same thing when I bought my 9500lb. In the end the cable length, weight and physical size put me off the 12,000. If I am really stuck and by myself (go figure, it happens) I almost always try to use a snatch block. More cable off the drum is a good thing and essentially turns my 9500 into 19,000lb winch.(depending how many wraps are still on the drum). I think a 12,000lb on has 80ft of cable and the 9500 comes with 125ft. I pretty much have the same bumper as you and the 9500 takes up quite a bit of room on the bumper. The 8274 sat down in the bumper, the 9500 sits on top of the bumper. I ended up fabbing all new mounts, couldn't reuse any of the existing mounting holes. Cable length is huge as far as I'm concerned. If I have to spool out 115ft of cable I actually get 9500lbs of pulling power and I can reach a tree (or whatever) 30-40ft further than a 12,000. Of course, if you were to spool synthetic rope onto your winch you could probably get 250-300ft onto it with half the weight. Mike McT and myself have been talking about buying a 1,000ft spool of synthetic to save on cost, but I just bought a new Warn and haven't had to use the winch yet, so getting new rope for it seems pointless.
Just my thoughts.

those are used prices , i went to look at the used ramsey it was an older worm gear style winch , buddy had a fishy story to go with the winch i couldnt find the model number but it was a heavy mother , he dropped his price to $300 when i said i wasnt interested then got upset when i said no again , i thanked him for his time and sugested craigslist .

i drove out to port kels to look at new winches and discovered that my mounting plate is designed for an upright style (8274) winch and i would need to fab or use a mounting tray if i got a lay down (m8000) winch , most seam to come with these plates any way so it shouldnt be a problem .

i havent looked at the m12000 yet as its out in chilliwack and i had both my kids with me all morning .

I have 9000 and find it pretty heavy. The 12k is too much IMOP for 60. Thats the winch they stick in big fords and stuff..... well at least you could winch them out :)

Speaking of winches...... anybody have a rollar fairlead they don't want to fit a 9000k warn. Or specifically my ARB. I can't stand the idea of paying 200 bucks for a new one....as I am sure some have changed to synthetic line and hawse fairleads..

So it anyone knows of a fairlead for sale, please let me know. Thanks...

Princess Auto usually has some on sale for cheap. I will be headingout of town on Monday and coming back Friday, after that I can have a look for you if you want. Last I checked they were around $50-60. They are not the heighest quality chrome but works fine.
Let me know.

Hey Mat, are they the same size as a warn fairlead? I thought they were smaller...physically that is.

I will try to measure the Hole to hole distance. As the ARb has the fairlead mount into it.
