Hello,

After going through several of the rest threads I have not seen any discussion of the solid vs drilled ratchet ring. I am in the midst of restoring two winches, an 8074 and an 8274. The 8074 had the original puck style friction slugs in it where the 8274 has the friction rings however, both have the ratchet ring with the holes in it. Has anyone determined if better braking can be achieved through replacing the drilled ratchet ring with the solid unit they now sell? (Warn part #7601) Common sense would indicate that the larger surface area would result in better braking but things don't always work out as one would expect.

Thanks.

I have not read anything on the performance of the two different designs. I think if you are looking at the solid brake ratchet side plates then you may also want to look at the oversized gigglepin brake pads.

I think the end answer will depend on your budget and intended use.
