I found a smoking deal on a local used 18,000 pound Warn winch. Only problem is that it is 24 volts. Is there any way to set something up to run this from my Fj62? Dual batteries are in the works, but I don't know if i can have a standard dual battery set up and still run 24 volts when I want to power the truck.

Don't take this for Gospel, but I am pretty sure this would work. What I am thinking that if you set it up like this you could still charge both batteries with the standard 12 volt alternator and have a constant 24 volts available on the other circuit.

It would require either using marine batteries, (have been using one on my 4runner so that my 12V winch has its own terminals) or a regular car dual post battery like either the 78DT or a 34DT.

hope this helps.

The more I look at it the less I am sure though, might want to run this by a friends before trying it but I feel good enough to at least try it on my truck. if I was trying to get 24 volts, which I am not. I wish we had soem spares out here I would go wire it up on the deck to check it out with a volt meter for yah before you went and spent the money on it.

Seems like alot of trouble, just how cheep is the 18,000 and how bad are you planning on getting stuck?

Where is the positive on the right battery going to ground?

I realize I forgot to show the little half circle thingies showing that the lines cross on the diagram. Unless it is that it is going through both terminals in the left battery to get to the ground, then I can see the problem. That's why I was not sure about it and was wishing I could set it up out here to try it.

you got any sugjestions on he could do it? I am curious now.

Like i said, sell it, no mather how far you get into a idea, that might work, there is nothing good o reliable to run a 24V winch on a 12V rig. Sell it for a 12V winch or change your truck for a 24V rig. anything else is trouble

I'd say 18K is wayyyyyy overkill. I was always told rule of thumb is vehicle weight X 1.5, so a 9K winch would be pretty good, plus you could always double line it.

Then you don't have to deal with the 24V BS. Just my .02.

Ditto. Clean it up make sure it functions well and put it up for sale on one of the Mog boards, take the proceeds and purchase a 12v winch.

An 18k lb winch on a 62 is ridiculous overkill not to mention the unnecessary extra weight on the nose.

cucvs (military chevies) use a 12 24 system most of the truck is 12 v but the starter is 24.they also use 2 12v alternaters to charge the 2 batteries .where i used to work we had a road grader that was 12 24 and had a special selonoid to start it .this solenoid is also used on semis for the same purpose and may help with your problem good luck
