Eric - mentioned above is the use of POR - whatever price you get from the shop, you should get them to use POR on it - the hatch is a rust magnet on these things - I'm in TX and I've got little places showing up on mine - especially on the inside lip near the seals.
Since you're going with a new hatch, get the extra proteciton of the POR, too - otherwise you may be redoing it in a few years.
Also, keep your eye on the usually rusty spots - inside and under-inside of the doors, rear fenders under the bumpers, front fenders under the bumpers, etc. I used to park mine outside but the rust strarted showing up - it's in the garage now, and that has slowed the rot. Rain just eats these things alive.
