vin tag clean up

What's the best way to clean up my vin tag, the one on the firewall? It's got some thick crud on it. I want to clean it up but not loose anything important. Any ideas?

carefully remove it and soak it in a non abrasive cleaner, such as greased lightning, or as Danno said, simple green or 409 for about an hour. Then VERY LIGHTLY hold it against a polishing wheel. Just enough pressure to polish it up.

I then took a needle and cleaned each number out.

Then, I washed it thoroughly and as Rhinoliner said - check out that link above here post #170.
