Have a 78 FJ40, VIN 268010 with manufacturing stamp of Jan 1978. From what I can tell the vin doesn't match up with a vin chart that I found. Am I reading it wrong? Reason being my 78 has drum brakes all around and I'm looking into purchasing a brake booster. The person selling the booster asked if my FJ was non USA. The booster he has is specific for non USA, can anyone give me a little insight so I purchase the correct one.

Thanks, Steve

Model number on the data plate will be more helpful in figuring out the origin of the truck.

Should look something similar to FJ40LV-XXX.

Geoff, I wrote down the information from the data plate. According to the plate it was produced in North America (NA), could they be more vague? North America encompasses a great deal of territory.

In 78 trucks were not produced for "NA" North American markets as far as I know. They were produced to different specifications:

ARL - Australian
EUR- Europe
GEN -General
USA - USA
CND - Canada

The model number will help determine which market the truck was built for. Front drums were standard through the end of production for some models. For example my 84 came with factory drums all around.

If you can find the model number it will be most helpful.

Cruisers never were produced in the US

Just take a pic of the VIN plate or plates. And a pic of the 40 will tell us alot

I like to use the frame number. Plates aren't hard to change or be changed with a tub change.

Generally though I'd agree with Landpimp that a 1978 with drum brakes all around probably indicate a furrin market truck.

Hi, I would be the seller you sent your question to. Good to see you on MUD. The booster question is the easy one to answer. You need the Drum Brake booster, not the dual diaphragm version. The market origin in itself does not matter.

As for your VIN, I second the comment above. It's quite conceivable that the plate or the tub got changed at some point. Possibly, someone imported a foreign market truck and stuck a U.S. VIN plate on it.
