VHF

Got this VHF for free. Don't know anything about them so I am wondering if it is worth keeping and installing.

Like John says, marine radio, not to practical on shore. Not being able to program repeaters would be one of the limiting factors.

The marine VHFs operate on a different region of the VHF spectrum from regular ones. I'm pretty sure there's no overlap. A friend of mine made the same mistake on a "screaming deal" on a handheld a few years ago.

I'm sure Sailor can tell you more.

The Marine band also falls outside of the HAM radio frequencies so HAM's are not permitted on those channels without the Marine VHF ticket. It is also not intended for land use as they are Marine frequencies for a reason. Also for trails com's it would be useless as we are all on HAM channels.

It was free so I figured it was worth a shot...and I do have a snorkel. Part of Ladner is 8' below sea level so it may be useful one day.

Seriously though if anyone has use for it it was free to me and free to you.

Free doesn't always = cheap does it? Although most of our club guys are cheap and like free.
