To keep the engine bay in my FJ40 looking original, I'm thinking about putting an F valve cover on the rebuilt 2F that's going into my 1972 project. Does anyone know of any issues with that approach?

What year 2F?
The 08/80 and later 2F’s had shorter valve train, and used a different mounting stud through the rocker shaft assembly to work with the shorter rocker cover.
If you have a pre-08/80 2F, you * should * have the taller rocker shaft studs which will permit you to install the stamped-steel F rocker cover. If you have the later 2F, the rocker shaft studs are shorter and will not protrude through the F rocker cover.

Based on everything I could find about valve covers here on MUD and Poser's comment, I decided to go with the '75 2F valve cover for my 2F rebuild project - this motor is going into my 1972 FJ40. The pros seemed to outweigh the cons. Pros - better oil distribution & less likely to leak. Con - doesn't look like a 1972 F motor. Since the idea of keeping the motor looking stock is out the window, I went ahead and had the 2F valve cover powder coated with Cardinal P141-BK03 BLK-TEX Semi Gloss - It's a semi gloss textured black. It may not dissipate heat as well as a polished aluminum cover but I think it looks aggressive.
