Just curious.
How often do you guys use your HAM to necessitate going for an upgrade?

Upgrading to the general class was not a necessity, but rather a choice. I had a fishing trip get canceled this weekend, so I decided to take the general test. One evening of studying and $15 for the upgrade. That's a minor inconvenience considering that I'm now licensed to operate on the entire HAM band.

The obstacle is now to get the equipment. More s*** to buy.

Almost. There are a few slivers of HF reserved for extras.

Start studying... :D

Congrats Mike. I've got Gordo's book for General and went to the first class at a local repeater group, but travel and work got in the way of the other 4 classes. Plan now is to just take the book to summer camp...lots of down time to read. Study it then and take the gneral test afterward. Which book did you study from, if any? The class was using the ARRL book and it was more geared to really learn the theory, etc. as opposed to Gordo's books which are very much geared toward passing first and teaching second.

I just installed a second Yaesu FT-8800 in the commuter Miata, so I've got identical radio's in both the LC and the commuter. Using the SBB1 on the Miata. I can really tell a difference between it and the SBB7 I run on the LC if I'm not on a wooded trail. SBB1 does not 'overpower' the little Miata. I'm using the K400C on the trunk of the Miata as well.

I'll do the general just for grins and giggles. Don't think the 8800's have many if any of the HF bands generals can operate in, but I could be way wrong on that. It's been awhile since I looked at the band plans and where techs vs generals can operate. Doubt I'll drop more coin on equipment for the higher bands. Next purchase will be an HT, probably the Yaesu VX-7 - similar dual band as the 8800's and will use the crossband feature of the 8800 for saftey with the scouts.

There doesn't seem to be a HF/VHF/UHF rig with dual VFO's, cross band repeat, and more than 200 memories. It looks as though I will need to keep the 8800 as well. I was hoping for a "one radio" solution.
