So, I pulled the front driveshaft to chase a vibration on deceleration issue I’ve been having, and expected I would need to keep the CDL on to keep power going to the rear wheels. I was not sure if it would stay locked when the truck was off or if the “park” on the transmission would be effectively neutered.

What I did not expect was to not need the CDL locked to drive. It seems just fine to hum along without the front drive shaft, working ABS and CDL “open”.

I suspect this indicates the diff is actually locked and the actuator needs love, which would also explain why the wheels have been chirping going in and out of park, and makes me want to pull the front diff to check for damage since I’ve been driving with that issue for far too long if that is what I’m looking at.

Before I jump down the rabbit hole, I wanted to get a pulse on the mud opinion. I’d rather not have the rig down for more than a week at a time. This is a US spec 1996 80, with the HF2A transfer case.

@Enders ,

Most likely what has happened is that the Viscous Coupler has seized. If you do have a 96 US model then the transfer case is the HF2AV not the HF2A that the 91-92 models came with. The V signifies the Viscous Coupler. There are a few threads you can search related to the removal of that. It requires removal of the rear extension.. Most are removing it completely versus an expensive part to replace with no ill effects.
