Ugh...Cross-threaded FJ62 transfer case fill plug

I'm seriously considering the Time-sert product. It's pricey at ~$200 on ebay, but considering having to pull the tranny and remove the t-case to retap the hole...$200 isn't so bad.

I'm trying to find someone that rents the darn kit, but no luck.

Can I get confirmation that the fill and drain plugs are all M18X1.5 thread? The plugs on both stock FJ62 T-case and H55f tranny are all the same (except drain plugs have magnets).

What a bad day....

Mine were.

M18X1.5 thread yes , but 18.5 mm long is too long ?? I'm not 100 % on that, I would need to have a look at the ones i have pulled in the shop.

Did you just pull the threads from trying to tighten without a new seal crush washer ?

I would never rent any of my thread time-serts kits, once dulled / damaged there toast, so a 200 per hole is huge $$$.

I'll pop out later and check

Confirmed. The 18.3mm is way too long (I'm looking at the bolt right now). I messaged the seller to see if he can provide the kit with the 10mm inserts.

I'm also looking for a supplier for new plugs as well...any suggestions?

i have tons of the oem plugs and the 10mm allen magnetic plugs on hand....

if i were you, i'd tap it out to a 1/2" pipe thread and run a pipe plug. simple fix and it'll work very well. sure, installing a time-sert would be a great fix as well but that's a lot more work and money.

The 10mm Allen plug Georg mentions above are a bit longer than the stock plug. Use one of those (if you don't already have it) and it will grab deeper threads (and use some RTV) and you should be ok. If you've really buggered the threads, then you'll need to also do as Georg suggests and tap for 1/2" NPT.

I used the Time-cert on mine and it is a forever fix (steel), but not worth it for just one case. I would not buy it again. I've seen the 1/2" fix on lots of trucks and it works just fine. Just DON'T over-tighten, Not much meat there.

Good luck.
