Has anyone ever heard of putting a dodge cummins turbo diesel in a FJ55 (or a 40)...

I was curious about doing it, but... Don't know much about what it needs as far as computer controlling. I thought it would be cool since they are an inline 6 and don't take up much room.

Use the whole drive train...tranny, transfer, engine

A friend of mine saw a CJ7 the other day with one in it!! I have considered doing it for years. Unfortunately, mi amigo didn't ask the guy any pertinent questions.

Anybody have some clues, let me know.
 
For the 55 you might have enough room for the six. I've got a 4bt (4 cylinder) cummins in my 40. Putting a six would be far more dificult since it is larger and will break a lot more sh*. unless you do use the whole drive drivetarin which will be very long and heavy. As for the computer if you get a pre 98.5 12-valve cummins you don't have one. with a 98.6 aft 24-valve you'll have a computer or you could run a mechanical pump on the motor(a lot of work). The conversion for mine was quite easy and with a six it would still be pretty easy. one thing is for sure, you'll have as much power as you'll ever need.

Do a search, there's been some threads on that subject in the last year or so.

Just a side note, I personally know the regional rep for Isuzu Industrial (strictly engines) and I spoke with him yesterday. I asked about where to locate a WF150015 adapter ring, which mates a chevy bellhousing to an Isuzu. He instantly told me that the EPA got wind of how popular those conversions where getting, and put the pressure on Isuzu to quit producing those adapter rings. :mad: He gave me the names of some people to call, but didn't know how much luck I would have since those rings went fast after production ceased.

Correct, the cummins 4bt will, the isuzu 4bd1t will not. The only real difference between the two is that you would never guess that you have a diesel under the hood when running the isuzu, compared to the cummins. Unless I can pull a magic straw out of my hat, a 4bt will be what I end up running.
 
93 earlier dodge 6bt are low rated HP and rotary pump
94-98.5 inline pumps higher HP.

prefer late 97-98.5 price and budget dependent

not all 4bt have the chevy adapter.

i was told at one time that the 4bt and isuzu both have a sae 3 bell,
and the adapter will work on both? (not for sure).

there is a fj40 in town with a Cummins(from a full size Dodge) and 727 in it

What about mating an Isuzu diesel to an Isuzu? I'm assuming that Isuzu diesel engines have to be imported. Do they bolt up to the bell housing of North American Isuzu's? Not that I'm seriously thinking about it. I had a first generation Trooper years ago. Pretty lousy truck.
 
Can you check to see if the WF150015 adapter ring is avaliable overseas? I doubt it would be too tough to get one shipped here.

That's another source I haven't persued enough, and I'll look into it. I've been spending what little free time I have trying to pencil out bringing in ambulance doors for *j-60's.
 
The part number actually came from a guy overseas but I know they exist here too. If someone can get one, then we can CAD it and have them made. Otherwise I do not think it would be too expensive (a couple hundred) to have one made from scratch, then CAD that. But, here is what I am told is that you do not need the adapter ring, basically it is SAE#3 (which is Dodge-Cummins) a round bolt pattern. Problem is the holes are 15 degrees off not sure if it's clockwise or opposite but it should work with a transmission that has a sae #3 bellhousing. And if it doesn't then do the plate adapter route but I am hearing that plate adapters are easy to make, especially after seeing all of the homebrew ones I have started seeing in old trucks donw before the Internet. These are t-case, tranny to bellhousing etc adapters.

Anywhoo, I have an FJ55 and I do not think the 6BT would fit. It is a weird and the smallest engine compartment of any cruiser. But I may be wrong, it may fit but will be tight nevertheless. Definetely no room for an intercooler, or at least the way I have it set up. The 4BT in my pig (SOA on 35's with an NV4500 rocks. At 7,000 feet flys up Parley's Canyon which is a freeway that goes from 5000 to 8000 feet in 10 minutes (big hill) in 5th gear at 70 mph no problem. And I have not messed with the fuel settings at all. I would run the 4BT, it sounds EXACTLY like a '91 or '92 Dodge pickup but again my engine is a '91. The 105 hp should be quiter I imagine (90% of the 4BTs are 105 hp rotary pump). Mine is 120 hp factory intercooled aka a weird one. But with an intercooler and 1/4 turn of screw the 105 version is same as mine.

Here is a photo. That is a Volvo 740 turbo intercooler, fits perfect over the radiator. Stock radiator seems to do the trick but I have a cheapo electric fan that is not doing the trick. Use the thinner Syclone Black Magic fan (just as cheap with kit as my cheapo) or a Taurus fan. I am upgrading to a taurus fan right now which should do the trick. If not I'll switch to a later model ('75 or later) FJ55 radiator which is slightly thicker and should do the trick (I know a guy with this radiator in front of his V8 and it runs cool always). But generally the 4BT is a cool-running engine. Weighs 700 lbs, 100 less than a F/2F. The 6BT weighs probably near 1200 lbs done and told I speculate.

I am also the person who started the error about sae#3 being the chevy bolt pattern. This is totally wrong, sae #3 is a round pattern (Dodge-Cummins uses is) and Chevy pattern is... Chevy pattern...

Also the Isuzu is not necessarily a whole lot quieter, just quieter in a different sense. It still makes a rattle sound, next time you come up to a Isuzu NPR truck, listen. Then the next time you are next to an early body style cummins pickup listen :) I still only have about 3' of exhaust, when I get that in and some sound proofiing (I have none right now and even some small holes to the engine compartment) should actually make it quite nice I think...
 
Andre, I done the google search and found nothing. Is there a site out there that has bellhousing bolt patterns? There is a pile of Isuzu motors around here running as we speak, and I still haven't seen a chevy pattern on all the different power units.

There are 2 different rings that I have seen. 9 out of 10 have a ring (that's what the starter bolts too) where there are 12 bolts spaced evenly on like a 20" circle (sae #5 I'm guessing) the other bell housing has more of a automotive look too it, but it's 2 bolts at the top about 4 inches apart, then another 3 bolts on both side around the ring. A chevy bell housing will-not bolt to neither..it just don't match up.

That's the problem with the whole idea, that 4 inch wide cast iron ring that bolt's to the block, and has the proper pattern for a tranny that is being used in a 40.

Please Andre, enlighten me....I'm begging.
 
I'm not going to edit my last post, after endless phone calls for the last week, I just hit a small amount of paydirt in getting ahold of an old cooter way north of me. There used to be an entire adapter kit that would bolt chevy, ford, and even a chrysler 727 to an Isuzu 4 cylinder, which was dicontinued by Isuzu back in the 80's because of EPA pressures. This old guy knows the in's-and-out's of bolting any tranny up to an Isuzu diesel. He's sure he has a couple ring adapters left for chevy and ford manual xmsn's, he also knows that he don't have any flywheel adapters for any of the automatic or manual xmsn's(which was part of these adapter kits) and he can show me exactly what needs to be reproduced at a machine shop as far as the manual tranny flywheel adapter is concerned.

Not that I'll persue it, but he also has kits for converting industrial power units into automotive engines.

Murphy's law says too always start at the bottom of the list....
