i would like to know the model number of the auto trans in a 87 turbo sr5 4runner.

A340H....just like my 94 4Runner.

H stands for Hydraulic

There are some differences in the two, but I don't know them.

Just some FYI. You can get the paint code, tranns code, gear code and trim off one little tab either on the firewall or door jam of your truck. Saves us a lot of trying to figure out what you have, if you can already tell us.

not to sound smarta$$ but yeah i know, this is a truck that i don't have access to right now but im looking into acquiring.

i know the truck is turbo sr5 runner either 86 or 87, and im trying to find out some info before i buy it.

any suggestions?

I think it's the same tranny but IIRC some have said that there are changes in the valve body.

Don't quote me on that tho...

I'm almost sure, you can source one from a V6, if you need to, and just swap out the BH.

They aren't anything special like the R150 if that's hat you're thinking.

what do you want to know? I can tell you 4Runners didn't come w/ 5 speeds.

If it blows or goes, I wouldn't be surprised if the hardest thing you had to do with swaping the ATs, is to change over the old sensors so they match the wiring harness connectors.

I don't have any 1st hand knowledge w/ them so sorry if something I say won't hold.

Somebody else is bound to chip-in here in a while.

ok thanks the only thing ive found is that it may have 4.30 gears instead of the 4.10.

i really want to get it but im afraid of ending up having to do alot of work on it when i just finished a lot of work on my truck.(wife wouldnt like this very much.)

it's just a de-compressed 22RE that is really hard to work on, in-frame.

IMO, once the issues of the turbo's reliability are addressed...

oooh, I just can't say it. it is more complicated than just your run of the mill 22RE. It won't be as reliable, but you will have a slightly more powerful convertible with an awesome 4WD chassis under it.

There's minor differences in the two. They aren't that bad. They're just more prone to making you work on them b/c there's more to them.

the work shouldn't be to bad for me, my dad owned his own mechanic shop for 14 years, that i worked in as a young teenager.(not to say your not as skilled as i am just saying in general)

my dad and i both love to work on cars and i love the time i get to spend with him doing it.

If you are looking to keep the 22rte; make sure the turbo spools up, take off the pressurized intake pipe and see how much oil is in there. the turbo most likely needs new seals.

If you buy it, put on a bigger exhaust let that sucker BREATH!! it will also keep your internal wastegate from melting.

Or,

You could buy/make and adapter to an aftermarket turbo. Like me.

The auto tens to slip when duels are added.when climing the oil collects in the cases. Some autos have a removable bellhousing, some do not. ??
