Our 12 year old Germ Shep/Rhod Ridg mix had a tumor from his front armpit removed that ended up being a cancerous nerve sheath type. The old man has been there for the birth of our three kids as well as stopped a home invasion attempt. He is doing fine now and the vet says this should buy him a few years which is all he needs. The bastage did re-open his incision all the way the day he got his staples out so he had to be put back under to stitch back up. So now he is confined and e-collared until the stitches come out. Anyone else have any experience with this type of cancer?

I'm not familiar with cancer but I'm glad to hear your buddy got his tumor removed and is recovering from the surgery.

Glad your buddy is doing okay. I have lost a few dogs to bone cancer. Its damn hard to make the decision to put a furry loved one down. Glad you will get a couple more years. I pray that our cat ( more or less my wife's and my furry son) passes in his sleep on his favorite spot on our bed in the night.
Glad to hear he got the tumor removed and has a few more years ahead of him.

Just found a little lump in his other armpit, just like the other one started out as. We'll have to watch him close as I'm not sure I want to put him throught the surgery and recovery again....but with 3 kids involved who knows what we'll do. I can already hear the questions firing at me from the kids mouths.
These can be some really tough decisions. Taking care of these guys brings tons of joy but can lead to some really difficult issues at times.
We have lost dogs to different cancers, none that were found in the arm pit. Earlier you get it removed the better of course. I understand not wanting to go through putting them under again. I am faced with similar decisions on our boxers.

She's really aged a lot in the last year... she takes pain pills twice daily for her joints because otherwise she's too lame to get up and down stairs. She's going deaf, cataracts, heart murmur.. all the sad old dog stuff.
It would be an extremely hard decision to make but with her other ailments I'm not sure we'd put her through tumor removal surgery. Just try to keep her happy and comfortable as long as she's eating and happy for as long as possible.
I'm really, really concerned about my 9 year old son when she goes. He lost sleep over his goldfish dying and this dog has been his keeper for his entire life.
We have a 2 year old chocolate lab who we've trained up for just this transisiton but I think he'll be just as sad when the old girl goes.
I hate this stuff.
