Anyone know of any places to take a stock 80 with e-lockers around Tucson AZ for a good 1/2 day family friendly outing? I'm going down south for christmas and figure getting out for a day trip would help the sanity.
I think Shawn is from the Tucson area. Also, look upShottsUZJ100on MUD. He's the VP of the AzLCA and lives in Tucson. He posts a lot on the 100-series forum.
3 Feather / Chiva Falls trail is east of town taking Tanque Verde which becomes Reddington Pass (dirt road). This climbs and switchbacks a few times (great views) and after a few miles, turn right on Chiva Falls trail. There is a semi-fence level staging area at the turn off.
Charleux Gap trail is north of Tucson and Oro Valley on Hwy 77. Turn right on Golden Ranch Rd and I think left on Lago Del Vista Pkwy. Be on the lookout for Charleux Gap signs to get to the turnoff. This trail will take longer than 1/2 day to get very far, but it is fun.
You might want to consider taking the 4Runner unless you don't mind clearance issues with the stock 80. You will probably find the lockers usefull on parts of these trails. I will be in Tucson over Christmas, but I don't know if I will be taking the FJ or not. If I do take the FJ, I will spend time on one of those trails. Have fun!
those are the main 2 trails close to town. I haven't been on them in many years now, but if they are even close to what they were, Chiva is your best bet for a stock rig. Charleux Gap was a bit tougher back then. have fun!
I did Chiva about 7 or 8 years ago. It was not very friendly on stock vehicles then (alot of potential for rocker damage in the lower portion). But you can always turn around if things get out of hand.
Well we went out and tried Chiva Falls Trail. It is very scenic but my stock 80 with 31" tires and running boards got stopped at the three feathers obstacle. 33's and sliders and I'll be back.

Not surprised that you didn't want to take your stock cruiser on the Feathers. No wheeling for m; we brought the big Tundra. I just got back from taking the kids on a walk at Sabino Canyon. That was nice. Merry Christmas!
