I always carry a spare tube-just in case. But in 2 years of desert riding I haven't had a single flat since I went tubeless. I used to average 8-10 flats from thorns and goatheads a year.
I guess it depends on where you ride, but in my area, it was one the best things I've done for my bike.
We have tubeless wheels on almost all of our bikes, including road. Running 80# in lieu of 100-110# makes a huge difference in compliance for a road bike.
