i use to mow 40 yards a week i know my dad helped my brother and i out a lot to get started. i like your style....
the ford cummins conversion is interesting. there is a lot to go into a good swap motor condition is just a small piece. get an old rusted out truck that your son can just have fun put some dents in and not care.
my first truck was a 1991 toyota sr5 excab 4x4 a cool truck worked my ass of for it but got in a wreck pulling the mowing trailer and realized i needed a full size in less than a year. found a 1990 ford reg cab long bed 2wd. for some reason i still have have dreams about that old ford work truck only paid 2k for it put some glass packs and just had fun slide into some snow banks, camping trips, victory lap around the school track when the fence was down and it just didn't matter. made a good redneck hot tub with a tarp in college too. did my first attempts at body work on it. it became part of me. rebuilt the top end after cracking a head at 200k and melted a piston down a month later (was pulling my jeep at this point in college with it)
ultimately your son needs to drive that decision if it's going to be his truck. my dad always supported, even if it didn't make since. he has to own it and be a part of the decision making process
