Last weekend Mike and I camped/wheeled with some friends out at Ocotillo Wells. We hit up Superstition Mountain for the wheeling.
It was a fun trip but costly for both of us as now our rigs are a little more rough around the edges.

Here are a bunch of pics:

Ouch, looks like the same obstacle got you both. Was it a wheelbase/vehicle size issue? Call me crazy but I really want to do that trail you guys did. I get out in that area fairly often but haven't been up Superstition yet. If I go up think I might take my taillight out. ;)
Thanks for sharing.

Wow! That is seriously narrow to try and get the 80 thru. Is that a trail someone had been up in the past or was it the first time someone went up?

The trail looked as if it hadn't been used in a long time.

You're right. The same off camber / rock out cropping got us both. The trail description even noted that longer wheelbase vehicles will have difficulty. But like you, we really wanted to do this trail. I'll admit I was very anxious at the start. After a 100 yards into the trail I realized I wasn't getting out unscathed. This was by far one of the hardest trails I've done so far, although I'm a noob in the rocks.

I'm pretty sure this was a new trail for everyone in the group. And like VC said, it looked like it hadn't been run in a while.

This was the end of the trail... It seemed like a paved highway after that 3.5 hr puckered journey.

Wow! Are there other trails in the area or is it one main trail?

Superstition has lots of trails there from easy to hard core from sand dunes to tight twisty rock gardens. Great place to bring quads or rock crawler.

Charles A. Wells' "Guide To Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails" has a good map of the area. This book is a must have if you expo/wheel SoCal.

Ouch..... What's that 4x4 club motto?? "God Forgives, Rocks Don't" LOL... Been there done that already.. I just like to Cruise in my 80 and enjoy the scenery.

If I still had my XJ I wouldn't mind getting rock rash, or worry too much about sheet metal.. but my 80 is a different story.. I like the sheetmetal in tact.. call me a p:censor:y I guess. LOL...

Trust me, I hear ya bro! I'd rather spend more time wheelin' than doing body work. I am gonna take my time and make her purdy again. And, my Krawler 459, which I ordered back in August, should be ready by late January. Time for the expo bug to take over the rock crawler bug...........not! Okay, 50/50, :D.

THAT'S SOME GAGNARLY STUFF!!!!!! I don't think anyone expects to cruise out and come back with severe body damage but it happens. I'm with you Scotty. I love to cruise around. I have not been there and I haven't done that. Maybe some day that will change. I'm sure the fellas had some good fun. Good stories. GAGNARLY!!!!!!!

Great pics! I make a few trips out there a year and need to check this trail out. I smashed up my driver side door last time I was out there. It is difficult to escape damage on some of the trails/notches with a larger vehicle. Thanks for posting pics.

Great pictures! Now you and Mike have battle scars like some of us. But then again I know you will make that truck look like it never had any damage.:D

Yeah, but this time it's really gonna test my body work skillz. I really have my work cut out for me this time, uhggg!
