Are there any real benfits to the TRD exhaust other than sound? I have built a few bikes and volkswagens in my day, and I know increasing the size of the exhaust pipes means you have to increase the amount of air/gas going into the engine to mainatin healthy back pressure. This may mean more power, but not more MPG. Also, without changing the size of the headers or removing the catalytic converter, are you really changin much of the exhaust physics? The increased flow doesn't start until after the CAT. That seems like a minimal benefit. And lastly, there is a 90 degree bend in the exhaust outlet. i know this is nit-picking, but this adds restriction back into the system where as a straight pipe would be more free flowing. I was thinking about getting one of these, but the more I think about it, it just seems like coolness factor, and not performance or MPG.

I put the TRD exhaust on my FJ a few weeks ago. I have not noticed any difference in mpg, but I have never really figured what my rig was getting to begin with. These trucks were not designed to be fuel efficient (think of a brick travelling down the road) and after a lift, bigger tires, heavier front bumper, winch and roof rack any gains created by the TRD exhaust would be negligible. I do like the throatier sound, however.

Every muffler company will tell you their muffler will increase mpg, I have never found that it does unless you make the entire truck breathe better...however i put headers on with a new muffler and had custom tubing run under the truck to have less restriction, while my mpg didnt increase there was a change in throttle response.

Just get a Magnaflow or similar type of after market muffler, they are mostly for sound and a little throttle response. Most of the TRD stuff in my opinion is over priced.

OVer priced and you will be sorry when you tag that thing on the trail and it bends into your wheel well fawking everything up! TAlk to an exhaust shop and see what they have...HIGH tuck designs are awesome... I just went with the magnaflo box only no changing the pipe size...it sounds awesome you can hear me from long distancing coming up the road..and it helped give a little Ommmffff. I also tagged my exhaust pipe in the back in Moab and used a sawzall with the outlet in the rear to give it a high tuck right where it bends over the frame in the back. NOO way can i hit it now hahahahh! GOod luck there are lots of choices

HIgh tuck!

FJ Cruiser High Clearance Tail Pipe

definitely agree... before realizing we were going to wheel the snot out of ours we got the trd exhaust and CAI... it's great when working together but we demolished the tail pipe tip... :(

IMHO they don't have the best angles/clearance for wheeling.:hillbilly:

I recessed my tail pipe tucked into the body above the frame at its lowest point it is level with the frame, no chance of bending it on the trails

IMO-Like many "TRD" parts, they are overpriced (cost vs. benefit), but basically "showroom enhancing items". That being said, I like the Bilsteins, black roof and 16" wheels (even though I use steelies, I'll get those alloys on again one day...just w/ better rubber).
I've crushed the exhaust way more from cat UP, I've flatted the steel that runs under the cross member darn nice!

Banks option

Banks just came out with a cat-back system for the fjc. Not sure on the price but banks makes good stuff. They claim no interior noise.
