My 1972 pig currently has a V8 (283) with a toyota 3speed. This is a family rig with occasional off road on fire trails. I'm looking for some recommendations on either auto or manual transmissions. What are some that are less expensive and easier to install/find? I've read some involve electronics, moving cross members, pricey adapters, and chopping up the body. If there is a common swap out there please let me know. The 3speed is killing the gas mileage!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe consider 3:70 diffs or a Fairly OverDrive for that overdrive effect from that 1:1 ratio on the three speed.

i agree that it's your old engine. my fj40 was around 8-10 mpg and i don't have that heavy of a foot. three speed trannys are just noisy, clunky, and limit higher speeds.

for better mileage, look into fuel injection, for better comfort, look into a four or five speed toyota swap. i had an sm465 and they are clunky and awkward compared to the toyota transmissions. i'd do a 465 again, but not as a first choice.
