Hey Guys, A buddy of mine with a sick 4 runner is starting to lose his transmission (5 speed W-56) he was asking me what options he had to upgrade? what would fit? what options he had? he has the 22RE engine in it, and wheels pretty hard he want to stick with a 5 speed and minimal fabricating). Can you help me with an answer for him. He was also wondering if he should just stick with another W-56? I have had Great luck with my W-56, what do you all think.

THanks in advance
Mike

easyest thing to do is throw a W56 right back in there.

The harde$t, is to find a R151 and throw'er in.

You might need this, IDK.

did ya try to change the oil yet? didya didya?

did ya try a shifter bushing yet? didya didya?

for a replacement, I'd try to find a truck. Not the tranny separate.

YUP YUP.... He changed the oil, and checked pulled the top of the cover to put oil in and everything checked out. (I know you can put the oil in it the other way) OK R151 or the W-56. I figured, I just wanted to check with the pro's THanks again./

the r151 is a v6 transmission.
the one chachi is talkin about is the r151F
those are out of the turbo trucks. they have a 23 spline vs all the other 4cyl trans have a 21 spline.

the only difference between the r151 anf the r151F is the bell housing. one bolys to a 4 cyl. one to a v6.

let me make this as clear as possible:

ANY 4CYL TRANS WILL FIT ANY 4 CYL ENGINE.

the old ones like the L series are shorter which requires drive shaft and cross member mods when used in 2 gen and up trucks.

but either way, they bolt to the engine.

NO WAY IN HELL will a 2wd trans EVER work for a 4x4 application.

the best trans you can buy is a G54.
G52's use identical cases, but the bearings and gears are slightly smaller.

the w56's all 4 styles seem to have a good reputation. but i dont agree with that.

the the all the old L series, the g54, the g52 and the w56 all use gear transfers.

the g58 uses a chain.

there are different combos on the w56 series of top and forward transfer and trans configurations.

R151f is the v6 trans internals F only clarifys that the rear portion of the housing is for a transfew case (F as in four wheel drive) and has the correct bolt pattern for the gear drive transfew case.

R150f is the 5spd behind the 3.0. Which has an entirly different tail housing, as all 3.0's had a chain drive behind the trans. NOT a gear drive. So really, the 151f is identical to the v6 5 spd....except ya know the tail end.

So, if you want to upgrade to the 22ret/R151f trans, you have to also get the bell housing with the trans.
a 2wd w56 has same internals as the 4wd, just the tail housing needs to be swapped. So...umm the internals work fine, if your comfortable swapping part of your housing.

sorry. R151F has a 4:29:1 1st gear, IIRC

R150 is just yer run of the mill 3:9?:1....IIRC

Same tranny ex 1st, 2nd, &3rd and the TC's
