transmission help needed ASAP

I would stick with overfilled from the get-go. Typically when you just let the tranny drain you don't remove ALL of the fluid anyway. I have found the only good way to get a full fluid change is to have it flushed at dealer. Thats probably where Toyota gets the 6.5 qts.= total fluid capacity.
 
My experence with the 440 tranny has been if you do a drain and fill 4-5 qts is what is needed. If you pull the pan and allow all the extra that is retained, then I usually got close to 6,5-7 QTs. It is almost the same as the 442 in the 93-94 in capacity. But if it really is bugging you , then drain it again, measure the fluid and put in 1/2 of what you drained out, then slowly add until you have what you need. It will not hurt to do it again and you know then how to do it in the future. later robbie

I would avoid doing so. Overfilling a transmission can result in foamy, aerated fluid, which has an adverse effect on lubrication and transmission operation. That is why there is a max line on the dipstick.

stick with it as in...that was likely the problem before you drained and not all came out. Not to say he should always keep his transmission overfull. Right?...right
 
Now I see; I had totally misunderstood the stick with it phrasing.
 
I just checked mine again.
For those who don't know already, there is a *huge* difference in dipstick wet level when the engine is on and off. From what I could tell, it will appear *way* overfilled if you check it hot with engine off, even if just fine when checked properly (idling).
