I ran an experiment on my Transmission fluid, I took a sample shortly after I acquired my GX460 @48,019 Miles. This was was taken from the transmissions check Port while at operating temperature (driven ~5miles) (waited 5 sec before taking sample). With no records of service this is likely factory fill. The fluid even though it drained super dark was perfectly ok and could go further!

@48,446 Miles I Installed a Magnefine Oil filter/Hayden 678 and added 1 quart and did the level procedure. I pinned the ATF thermostat so the fluid cycles through the cooler/filter throughout this "test".

@5,037 Miles here is the Particle Count, used the same sampling method as above. So this is after installing the filter and ~4 quarts of fresh fluid through the transmission one drain and fill and installing the filter/cooler (of 11.6 US qts).

SizeBeforeAfterReduction
≥4 µm22,1119,402−57%
≥6 µm3,157923−71%
≥14 µm84.928.5−66%
≥21 µm18.96.1−68%

The magnefine filter contains both a filter element and magnet which has done a great job cleaning up the fluid! These particles damage clutch packs, valve body bores, and solenoids so its beneficial those particles be reduced/removed. Especially on this transmission that has valve body/solenoid issues.

I would recommend anyone to get a magnefine filter installed as early as possible and do your fluid maintenance!

Edit: Updated UOA Report with Flashpoint.

Excellent info!!

Side note… IMO..excellent V36 Skyline

2011 6MT G37 Sedan

I still have my ‘07 G35x (V36)-VQ35HR fully loaded I purchased new. Awesome car I will drive until I can’t get parts like my 460.

Hard to beat the Magnefine filters! I have one on both my transmission and power steering return lines. Well worth the $25.

I saw you posted over BITOG, but couldn't respond so googled some more to see if you were over here or at GXOR!
I had my transmission rebuilt 30k+ miles ago and am considering adding the filter in (10' Sequoia w/ AB60E). I plan on doing a "baseline" when I sample the oil at it's current mileage, add the filter and test again in like 10-15k miles to see if there's any improvements (reduction) in PPM counts along with splitting the filter to inspect.

Great info!

I was debating it for awhile, but I finally added a inline filter to my external cooler because of this post.
