My transfercase had been leaking and I figured when it was out I might as well replace all the bearings and seals. So I got all the parts but due to lack of time I finaly decided to take it in to the tranny shop and have them do it. A week later I finaly get it back and as soon as I jump in I notice the 4WD indicator light in the dash is on but the shifter is in 2HI and the 4HI push button is in the off position. They first try and say it was always like that, wich I call bullsh#t on. Then they tell me to take it and drive it around because its probably just sticking a little and the light will go out. I take it and lock in the hubs, sure enough its in 4HI. When I shift the 4WD lever into neutral the light goes out but other than that it is stuck on. So after about an hour I take it back. Of course they are gone home for the day so I just left it there.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what would cause this? I did look underneath at the wirring an it can only go together one way because of the conector plugs and I tried switching the hoses around on the vacume solenoid and that didnt work.

You would think a tranny shop would have noticed this on the test drive!

I think there is something around the clutch sleeve/shift fork which can be reinstalled incorrectly that can cause these problems.
It could also be a leaking diaphragm in the shift mechanism
If you sure of your facts, dont budge and dont lose your cool. Just keep telling them that it wasnt like that before and you want it fixed.
