You are correct most taps have to have the nose taken off to get the threads cut without hitting the gear, well done, had to do same

FWIW, there is a tool called a bottom tap that is threaded all the way to the end. It was deigned to cut threads all the way into a blind hole, hence the name.

The angle ground at the end is there to match the tap drill point. You can see the difference when you compare a standard tap side by side.

You can clearly see the first four unformed threads on this tap, as compared to the full threads on the previous model.

This photo, oddly enough, is from the Fastenal website page for bottom taps - you'd think they, of all people, would know better.

In an ideal world, you'd start off with a taper tap to more easily follow the drilled hole, followed by a second tap, and then finally use a plug tap if you still didn't quite get the full length threaded to full diameter.
I didn't really want to buy a full set of M20 taps tbf, so I got one that came with a replacement drain plug set.
As it turns out it was a second tap and the taper was just short enough.

Caveat for American readers; my second tap is your Plug tap. My plug tap is your bottom tap.

We Brits don't want to spend our time tapping bottoms I guess?
