Looks like my transfer case is seeping/leaking where the two "halves" bolt together. I searched to see if anyone else had had this issue and it seems as though some folks have had companion flange leaks, but I couldn't find an indication of a leak like mine. Can this be repaired by removing the rear drive shaft and companion flange and then splitting the case while the unit is still bolted to the transmission (installed in the vehicle), replacing the gasket and then bolting everything back up? Or, does the transfer case as a whole need to be removed from the vehicle. I had mechanic tell me recently that I need to remove the transmission and transfer case from the vehicle to fix the leak. It looks to me like you can get to all the bolts to split the case, but I figured that you guys were the folks "in the know". Thanks in advance.

Essentially, no. The back half of the case prefers to separate with a large chunk of the internals... it's the way they are built. However, removal of the complete case is actually on the simple side, as far jobs of that type go.
