Finishing up rebuilding my transfer case and just buttoning up a few things when a weird question hit me.

Does it matter if the transfer case is in 2 or 4 or high and low when I put the dent and spring in? Sounds crazy but I just want to make sure I don’t drop these balls in and thoroughly screw up.

It does not matter.

Just make sure the high/low range shifter engages with the shift fork shaft when you put the rear case section on.

Yeah I ran it through all its motions. I guess I just don’t see how that ball stays with the spring as the high low moves back and forth.
The ball is spring loaded against the shaft. There are detents (notches) in the shafts at the shift positions. Between them the ball runs on the shaft, with the spring under additional compression.

The low range gear is aft of the high range gear on the output shaft. Therefore the shift sleeve needs to be in the aft position to lock the transfer in low range.

I can't remember the orientation of the shifter crank relative to shift fork crank. But the shift lever pulls the crank to the left (driver's side on a left handed car) when you push it over to the right to get low range.
