Hi all I am new to the 100 series section. I recently bought a 2001 lexus lx 470. I crawled under it recently and discovered that the transmission has 30-43le stamped on the model plate. I did a search and thought it should have the a343f. Any ideas?

Not a clue. Google told me those come in Jeeps............ Did the previous owner give you any service records?

So Toyota built them for Jeep...?

Aisin built a lot of the components in Toyotas (transmissions, locking hubs, etc.) and the AW4 in Jeeps. AFAIK the only Aisin parts Jeep has used is the AW4 and AX-15 transmissions.

Think of Aisin to Toyota the way New Venture Gear is to Chrysler, Ford, GM.

I get it. So is the 30-43LE/AW4 just a rebadged A340F? I read some forums or articles or something about people not being too happy with the durability of the tranny.

The 30-43LE name is on this "goto" page at Novak: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/aw4.htm but I never noticed it and I have read that page before. Reading in interlaced mode I guess.

But yes, the AW4 and A340F are the same transmission. There are differences in the tail cone section specific to the vehicle they are installed (IIRC) but otherwise the same internally.

Anyone complaining about a A340/AW4 from a durability point of view is clueless. They are tough transmissions that will take a lot of abuse. I consider it the best part of my XJ besides the 4.0 engine. It's especially impressive given how physically small/compact they. The Toyota Supra drag race guys use/abuse these transmissions also.

Think about it... a UZJ100 is a 5500 lb pig of a truck with a 6500 lb tow rating. Takes a decent transmission to deal with that.

I think a lot of the negative B.S. about these transmissions come from good 'ol boys that are "sad" their Jeep doesn't have a POS Chrysler transmission and then Novak put the negative blurb in their web page and the cycle repeated because the good 'ol boys read it online. <lol />

Hmmmmmm. A Jeep with an AW4 might be a vehicle I might actually not totally ignore when shopping.

Unfortunately, the AW4 only came in the Jeep Cherokee from 1987-2001. The first gen Grand Cherokee (ZJ) got it briefly in 1993 but otherwise got craptastic Chrysler transmissions. The RFE545 in the second gen Grand (WJ) is adequate. The newer stuff I dunno/care about.

So was the 1987-ish version basically an A440F then, if the A340F wasn't designed until the mid-late 90s?

I was thinking it was a new model that superseded the A440F and the likes. Learned something today.
