Tranny wont shift into 5th and Reverse

Ok pulled the tranny out of the truck and removed the shifter, put tranny back and shifter in now wont go into 5th or reverse what gives??? 82 toyota truck sr 5 and yes 5 speed tranny

Check to make sure the shift forks are all in neutral before installing the shifter. Back up a sec... does the other gears shift correctly? What gear was it in when you pulled the shifter? Did the tab on the end of the shifter miss the slot on the forks?

Can you move through the other gears? Does transfer output(s) move while in those other gears?

yes all other gears work except 5th and reverse. t-case works fine

Next question - why did you pull the trans? Can you access the top plate, or do you have to drop the trans to do it? Sounds like the shift fork retaining pin is gone. Remove top plate/cover and check each shift fork/rail for proper function - forward, back, neutral - should be a firm detente for each position.

took off and cleaned up a bit.. put back together its fine couldn't really see anything just a bit of surface rust... its all good now
