I had posted earlier about the 85 EFI. Like I said it has 200,XXX on the clock. How soon will I be looking at a rebuild on the tranny. I know that it has not been wheeled. Just a daily driver. And what is the rebuild like money wise and difficulty wise as I am a broke novice mechanic.

My local trans shop will let me exchange any toyota manual trans for a W56 for 350 bucks. Get a good manual and accumulate parts before you start, clutch pilot brg etc. The manual will tell you to assemble the Xfer case to the trans before you install the assembly into the truck. This is a good idea because the seal between the two units can be damaged if they are not mated carefully and you will not be able to tell until you have gear lube coming out around your Xfer case shifter. The assembly is long so get a tranny jack or a good sized helper.
That being said, unless your trans is making noises or jumping out of gear just keep clean oil in it and forget about it, it will tell you when it wants to be replaced.

I am assuming that this is a W-56 though I have seen some with the G52. The W-56 is a lot better transmission and many have lasted over 300,000 miles if taken care of. If the transmission goes out, you can get a rebuilt one from Marlin Crawler for around $1,200-$1,300. Not a bad price. Of course you would want to resurface the flywheel and get a new clutch while you have it apart. The prices go up dramatically if you don't do the woek yourself.

That is an excellent deal. I have 2 G-52's that are worthless and I would like to get 2 W-56's. At those prices, you could spin them and make a profit.

Yeah it was awesome, Nogalitos gear in san antonio. I was just talking to the sales guy about how cool it would be if I could turn in an L52 core and get a W56, not really being serious. Ol' dude pecks around on the computer and says "sure, I can do that". Later on I tried the same thing with an R151 and he said that he'd only do it for stuff that he had plenty of on hand. Try it out with your local trans shops, you don't know until you ask.

An afterthought- I would not put a bargain shop tranny up against a Marlin rebuild. I am guilty of cheap and quick all the time, but if you want best quality Marlin is the man. No one compares.

Unless you have a problem or loud bearings I would leave it alone.
