Tranny problem, no 2nd gear (almost)

A friend of mine just got a 1995 40th anniversary FZJ80.

He has some strange symptoms which keep us puzzled.

He starts the truck and puts it from park to D...
- It goes into 1st normally
- It shifts to 2nd but immediately afterwards it jumps to 3rd (so it accelerates slowly)
- From 3rd to 4th it operates normally
- When he presses the pedal to the floor there is no kickdown from 4th

And now the surprise...

When he starts the truck and puts it in '2' for a second, and then into 'D', the truck operates normally, all the gears work, kickdown works. This state remains until he goes into park or shuts the engine.

What could be the problem?

I wonder if it's related to the 2nd gear start switch. I assume the models over there have this feature as well. The button is on the console next to the shifter. Assuming it's not activated for 2nd gear start, maybe the switch has gone back. Perhaps you could unplug the switch and see what it does.

Thanks Brian for the reply. I don't think it's a 2nd gear start switch problem. The truck starts normally on first gear, keeps it until the appropriate RPMs, switches to second and instead of keeping it to the right RPMs it goes immediately into third gear.

Another link to a problem I had not long ago. Has he tried the brake pedal and then see if the problem comes on. I went through one heck of a time seaching this one out. In any case worth a link if it helps right?
