Any good trail recommendations near Sedona, AZ?

We are going to be in the area for a full day later this week and are interested in finding a good trail to spend a few hours on.

Mainly stock 200 with OEM spacers up front and duratracs (275/70R18). Not looking for anything extreme, but definitely interested in scenic component.

Any thoughts/help would be much appreciated.

Then, if you have the time, definitely hit Sedona. Crown King, the back road, can be difficult for an unlocked and stock 4x4 especially if wet. But it is an entertaining ride with great views and some nostalgia to boot. Supposedly the Viking from "Gold Rush" has a claim up there. I can't confirm it.

Alternately, you can take the Pink Jeep Tours through this area and not bother renting a 4x.

If you don't mind a "road trip". Out of Glendale head up to Wickenburg and then up to Prescott. From Prescott go up to Jerome (ghost town) and through the Verde Valley to Sedona. From Sedona, you can then head up Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff and see the sights around there or head back down I-17 from Flag to Phoenix. Or you The trip from Glendale to Sedona can be done in 4 hours but, you will be stopping and taking in the sites along the way. In reality, it is a day trip. The scenery from Wickenburg to Sedona (and Oak Creek) is fantastic, a must see and is all paved. Combine this with the off-road areas in Sedona and I promise you, you will not be sorry for taking it!

check the Copper State Cruisers forum for great info on Arizona trails.

Entering Sedona from the east off Schnebly would be a good start (or exit). Depends where you're coming/going, tons of good trails there. Stick to blue and green and you'll be fine. You'd be fine on the red ones too, but might get an under bumper scrape or two.

I do have all the details on those trails, if you see any you want you can PM or find on interwebs.

I think Schnebly is closed over the top during the winter so approaching from the east may not work. You can do an in and out from the west and should be fine.

I went to NAU in the early 2000s and did Broken Arrow probably over 100x. Super fun and scenic trail, but even back then there were too many pink Jeep tours on the trail (you’ll see).

That is awesome, Matt! I've hiked Broken Arrow and almost did it in my LR4 (my wife wanted to hike it instead.) We almost stayed in Sedona a couple weeks ago and I was going to check it out. As it was, the weather was not good so we ended up staying in Cave Creek. But we'll be back to Sedona. Would love to hear how you did going down the steps on Broken Arrow.

We did that trail that the Pink Jeep folks call Diamondback (I think) and is called Greasy Spoon in the Funtreks book. Did it in a stock Land Rover LR4 though they had done some work on the trail (filled in a few holes) the week before. It was good but don't do it from east to west in the afternoon. I did it just as the sun was low in the sky and as I would look up hill I could see nothing but the sun in my eyes. A Pink Jeep driver was trying to "spot" me up the hill but I couldn't see him. (Didn't need a spot due to terrain, only because I couldn't see.) That was probably in March.

FR226 is Schnebly, and not sure what consitutes winter but it's open currently: Coconino National Forest - Alerts & Notices

Steps on broken arrow look much harder than they are. Going up would be different but doable, I was too chicken to run into a Pink Jeep (was a good thing too cause one came down shortly after we did).

Looks like a fun trail with amazing views!

Might have to swing through there on the way back from Telluride.

I did Broken Arrow in my 93 Izusu Trooper RS (a rare 2 door short wheel base model) back in '94. It was a blast.
I also will admit to having done a Pink Jeep Tour of that same trail a year prior with a girlfriend. Beautiful area!

Glad to hear Schnebly is open! Should be a good drive and as @Mogwai said, east to west (traveling into Sedona) is the best as you have great views all the way down.). It’s been very dry throughout the southwest this year so maybe the snow issues on the higher elevation section through the pine forests, etc. were not there this year.

Definitely going to do Broken Arrow next time I’m in town.

Thanks everybody for the recommendations. We are going to run schnebly on the way into town and then Broken Arrow and/or Soldier Pass the next day.

Looking forward to stretching the 200’s legs a bit and seeing some of the back country over here.

Let us know how it goes. I'd be especially interested in Soldier Pass.

Schnebly was closed from the West at I-17. The east side was open for 4 miles before being closed off. It was a bumpy 4 miles, but had great views.

Soldier Pass was closed as well. Bit of a bummer...

I was there with the family in 2016 vacationing I didn't have my LC because I had a 5th Wheel in tow but I rented one of those other vehicles in town for the weekend we ran Broken Arrow, Devil's Bridge, Soldier Pass and caught the sunset on Schnebly Vista were the ones that stood out. The other trails we ran seemed more like fire roads. I found the trails to be mild for a rental on 33's and aired down I used the rear locker on the way up the stairs on Broken Arrow but really had good traction everywhere else. I can't wait to go back in the LC I did stop and say hello to an 80 owner of one the trails. It wasn't a day on the trails but Slide Rock State Park was a great time as well, would imagine its kinda chilly to enjoy right now. Can't wait to go back in the LC we had a great time there. Safe travels

We have a vacation home up on the rim just northeast of Sedona about 7 miles... I love this area :) I have never taken the LC down Schnebly but have driven that road dozens of times in all sorts of vehicles (including several passenger cars).

The trails up in the forest are especially fun after it rains (Arizona mud is crazy)... I usually go out on two wheels to explore since it gets really narrow in certain spots.
