I live outside DC but am heading to Salida for about 2 weeks. My sister and brother in law have a cabin and land outside Salida and they are coming up from Camp Pendleton for the 4th of July so we, my fiance and I, are packing the 60 up and driving out there. We are planning on being out there and would love to do some camping and trail riding while we are out there. My truck is pretty set up and can handle a decent amount but this is going to be a solo so Im looking for trail that are between tame and moderate. Ive been checking out Traildamage and have both FunTreks books and am slowly getting an idea of whats around. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you are on 32's with no lockers here is a list of trails I would recommend.

Shelf Road
Phantom Canyon
Medano Pass
China Wall
Lime Ridge
Marshall Pass
Poncha Creek

Some of the trails over ~11,000 feet won't be passable until later in July when the snow melts.

I would recommend you checkout the Sand Dunes (Medano Pass), St. Elmo and
Bishop's Castle.

If you want to check out some hardcore wheeling just go to the parking lot of Carnage and walk up the trail to watch the buggies. The trail is about one mile long so walking it is do able.

If your 60 had 33's and at least one locker I would recommend the next level of trails but not to start with.

32s with a Detroit in the back and a True Trac in the front....not to mention the naturally exasperated 3B. Cannot wait. She flexes pretty well and even though its only got 32's, I can get through some decent stuff. I would like to see some really nice areas but the truck does have to get me back to Virginia so the really hard stuff is not under consideration.

With some sliders and good bumpers you can try some level 4 and 5 trails.

Chinamans Gulch
Grizzly Lake
Iron Chest

These would be good to go with some on.

Okay. So, it sounds like I could actually do a decent amount of trails. Im compiling a list of ones I would like to hit while I am out there and will post it up once I have it all together. I guess I should clarify on the truck:
3B
H55
4.11s
32x11.50
Slider
4+ front and rear bumper
TMax 9k
Detroit rear w/ TT front
30 spline EMPI fronts (same as Dirty 30/ Marlin)
4" MAF/ OME SUA w/ shackle reversal

Its not built to hit major rock trails but go places up to that point.

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

If you're going to get down to Sand Dunes, you could pick up Hayden Pass on the way up toward Salida also ... sounds like a cool trip!

Doesn't necessarily have to be alone - give a shout here when you're coming through, and somebody may be up for a ride!

Thanks guys. I am almost done compiling the list of ones I am interested in seeing. I need to run it buy the fiance/ co pilot and decide on the last few. We will probably stick within the central CO area and are using the FunTreks books I got yesterday and Traildamage to plan them out. Dont really want to go further north than Leadville. I really do want to make it out to Wheeler Geologic Area, which isnt in the book, though. Pictures of the formations just look damn cool. Trail isnt that hard either.
