TRAC/VSC/CDL light acting up?

UPDATE: The problem exists as it did before. Changing the VSC/TRAC computer didn't solve this.

Everything works
It's just the lights acting up and the VSC not coming back on until a re-start

So, it'll be looked at again next week. My guess is same as the original....something simple....like a connection of the T-case actuator.

Things onyl go south after you lock the CDL.

So, those who were fearing EXPENSIVE CPU swap.....NOPE!

Thats good, I suppose...Nice diagnosis by your dealer BTW...

I am really curious what the culprit ends up being

Was this ever fixed for you? I've got the same lights on.

I need to go back. They replaced the TRAC VSC CPU though it still does it. I believe it's a sensor/connection in the T-case. After a day of wheeling it stops doing it until my next trip.

Couple questions:

1. Did the dealer tell you what codes are stored when they replaced the ECU ?

2. When you flex out your rear suspension how tight does the wiring get ?

3. When you lifted it did you inspect all wiring that moves with either axle ?

4. Are you running stock gears ?

5. Do you see any rub marks on the body near any connectors for the T-case or the axles ?

6. Do you have a CB ? is it wired correctly ? could it be tapped into a harness it should not be ?Any aftermarket alarms ? Stereos ? DVD players ? etc. ?

7. Has the vehicle been driven in deep water, even just a dunk ? Possible water contamination on a wiring connector ?

8. Do you have VSC/ABS activation when slowing down or accelerating from a stop light ?

9. If you punch it to the floor from a stop ? Does TRAC kick in ? It should make noise and cut your throttle down a little.

10. Any wheel bearing noises ? or hub noises ?

Food for thought .... keep in mind that the dealer does not work on modified 100 series Cruisers very often. A vehicle like yours while very cool, creates additional challenges for a technician that he may not be used to or even trained in diagnosing.

They will not take your rig off-road so duplicating the concern is very difficult for the tech........trying to diagnose something you can't experience in someone elses vehicle is not easy.

Let us know what you find out.

I just re-read this......I don't mean to sound pissed. Just trying to help.

Give the guy a break, if you want it diagnosed correctly the first time....then help the guy out and give him all the information the first time.
Modifications, driving style, and experiences off-road.

You have no idea what you're saying. :) This dealer is an excellent dealer. If I was worried about it, it would be sitting there until they fix it. Next time it goes in for something they'll look at it. Heck....what dealer's gonna throw in a $1200 CPU just to hope it solves the problem? Hat's off to these guys!

Everything works. I'm not concerned.

The VSC TRAC and VSC OFF lights go on on my '02 LX-470. The dealer replaced the "yaw rate sensor" 3 months ago to the tune of $500. I didn't see the lights for a month, then they started going on again. They spent a day diagnosing it and wound up updating the "software" and recalibrating the system.

I haven't picked it up yet (waiting for parts for something else), but I'll post if the new software/recalibration solves the problem.

OK FOLKS....GREAT NEWS ON THIS SITUATION:

After diagnose, the dealer put in an entire new TRAC/VSC CPU under extended warranty. 2 days later when I locked the CDL the same problem existed. I notified then immediately and they said the next time the truck is in the shop for some work they'll find the real culprit and fix it for free. (The ext warr expired a few days after the CPU went in).

OK...so...the truck was just in for front wheel bearings and a new steering rack. They re-looked at the TRAC crap....suspected a new culprit and IT'S FIXED!

GET THIS:

All it was all along was the switch INSIDE the CDL actuator housing. When the CDL locks it pushes a switch UP to send the signal/info back to the CPU so the proper lights can light. THAT'S IT...A LITTLE SWITCH...and that's after they put in a $1200 CPU. :D :D :D

Any how...it's fixed. For you others with this issue I'd suggest someone look into that switch ASAP!

I was locked in low this past weekend hauling some brush - is it normal for 'VSC Off' to be lit up?

Yes. If you see the TRAC VSC light lit, it's a warning something isn't right. Plus, my CDL lock light kept flickering and/or going and off at will.

Damn modern electronics... :flipoff2:

Do you have a part number for this switch? My mothers cruiser is having the same issue. Any detail maps, pictures, writeups would be great.

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

Sorry...none. They did this without paper work. It was years ago. I would have to imagine that any Toyota mechanic would know which switch is the "reporting" switch inside the T-case.

My new-to-me 2000 LX is doing a variation of this. When you activate the CDL it engages but the indicator in the cluster does not come on nor the VSC off indicator. The switch that detects CDL engagement appears to be bad on mine as well. I can unplug the connector and bridge it with a wire, and both lights come on as they should. Looked the part up in one of the online catalogs, if I'm not mistaken the part# is 84222-12010. Will report back once I've ordered it and know for certain that I was correct on the #.

Edit: Installed the CDL engagement sensor/switch today, the part # I listed above is correct.
