Hello, I’ve been troubleshooting a white smoke scenario at idle and beyond. Recently a lift or feed pump was brought into question. I did not know the vehicle was equipped with an initial lift pump. And cannot find any literature regarding placement to confirm. I suspect some issue with pump systems. But have been focused on HPFP and injection.
Any insight into hp fuel systems appreciated if anyone has experienced similar conditions. I live at significant elevation, 9000ft and am thinking to adjust timing / plunger depth. I’ve read researched about Advancing timing for elevation. Currently plunger depth is 1.5mm At TDC. spec is 1.35 felt like advancing further would be too far so not sure about timing adjust now.. Truck was imported from firetruck usage at similar elevation in Japan. Think maybe it was adjusted already for that elevation. Picture of my Fuel pump . It’s sitting at a diesel injection shop that’s far more familiar with Cummins and Bosch and is not keen to work on this one. also pressure testing the injectors to confirm.
Been through most the rest of truck and running out of ideas..

I was having a lot of problems with my 1hz. I ended up replacing the primer and all the flexible rubber fuel lines. It had been sucking air in as the rubber had perished. The fuel pump sucks fuel from the tank

Guessing 14b injectors will be similar but it's recommended to replace or rebuild 1hz injectors every 100000km. Made a big difference as well

Hope you get it sorted

Thanks for this! What was your symptoms when sucking air? I’ve heard it can cause incorrect injection timing. Where you having white smoke?
When I put it back it back together I’m going to add a clear sight in fuel line to verify if I’m sucking air anywhere. Will look into replacement fuel filter housing, thats where the primer is built in.

There is a lift pump inside the injection pump, as there is in any Bosch type rotary (VE) injection pump. The Nippon Denso pumps are pretty much identical to the Bosch pumps. Try finding another diesel shop. There is no other pump in the fuel system. The lift pump is a vane type pump, and they are not known for failing prematurely. What gave you the idea that your issue is related to the lift pump?

Thanks! Someone else mentioned having "lift pump" issues with there 14B. but they didnt know much about it. Thanks for confirming its a part of the main pump.
Yeh ha, hoping for some answers if my pump can be bench tested. Ive added more air, Turbo'd. but white smoke condition persists. I've messed with fuel and Idle adjustment but the white smoke is consistent. clears up when held at highter ~2k rpms. and will puff black when rev'd. but generally smoky, AND smelly like unburnt fuel. Could be injectors. will report back when I hear from diesel shop.

Well heard back from shop, - Injectors were popping below spec, and poor spray pattern. so those are getting rebuild. Fortunatly the parts are all still availible.
Pump is getting sent out for bench testing and repair.
Will report back when I get everything back, and together.

Symptoms were poor running/stalling, usually under load. I didn't notice white smoke but I was driving

Hope you get it sorted soon

I went to a local hose shop and bought the heaviest walled fuel line they had. It was fiddly to install but I figure the less the hose can deform the better.
