Tow hitch question

A link would be nice to be able to understand what you're talking about.
If you are saying the 'plug', that has the ball mounted to it, is too deep to slide into the receiver hitch then chop off the excess w/a chop saw. A muffler shop will do it for $5 probably.
I suspect it's the receiver tube he's having the problem with. It's a 470, so never been up close and personal, but even on the 80 series, people have run into this with subtanks.
If it's just a small intrusion and the area is well clear, i.e. forward, of the hitch insert retaining pin, cutting it off may work. Too much and you're end up with Floppy Receiver Syndrome (FRS).
Does the 470 come with the standard Land Cruiser 4-bolt mount for a pintle or other hitch on the rear crossmember/bumper? Might be one under the cladding? There are hitches designed to bolt right in there of various capacities and costs. Man-a-Fre or Slee had a receiver tube one like that, but not sure it was rated for towing?? I've got one as a backup to me pintle hitch...[checks receipts] yep, Man-a-Fre, P#7703 and YES, it's rated at Class II towing. $89 in 2009.

When I put my 285 in the stock spare location I couldn't insert the plug into the receiver far enough to get the pin in. I had to cut it. I'm assuming that's what he's referring to.
Yeah, could be either one, given he was a little vague on things. The hitch/plug can always be replaced with another if you cut too short. Just buy another if you don't already have a spare.

lot of work to replace the hitch sometimes, depending on how it attaches. Gotta be real careful cutting it for that and the reasons I mentioned. And oftentimes to avoid removing it just to cut it, people might be tempted to cut it on the truck...be careful about where the end of that sawzall blade is going if you do!
Obviously, this is a project you want to scope out before you start to avoid nasty surprises.

Just cut the"plug" part, to use your term, enough to get the it in as long as there is an inch or more of material behind the "pinhole". Been there done that.
