Thai, you know I appreciate the information you bring to the table and I don't want to sound like I'm bashing or anything b/c I'm not; but the tire comment makes no sense. Upsizing tires is the cheapest and most effective way to increase ground clearance. A vehicle that is taken offroad into anything moderate or above should have the tallest tire it can fit at full compression in my opinion. IF 31" is the tallest the G can fit then that makes sense. There is only one thing that will get the diff off the ground and away from rocks; that's the tire! I am sure your G's drivetrain should be able to handle upsizing to at least 33's (285/75's for us 16"ers) even if it was for trail use only (ie 2nd set). Hell it would be no more stress than the drivetrain sees with AMG's G55 setup!!!

I totally agree with you. Taller tires are a good and cheap way to lift your truck. No arguments from me. However, you will need to balance off-roading needs, daily driving requirements, and long-term durability...especially if it is your only vehicle. (I am planning on getting a cheapo Chevy Cobalt in the near future as my daily driver.)

Trust me, i have debated this over and over again. I could have went with a bigger tire, but i was unsure if my ESP (stability control; aka VSC on Toyota), Brake Assist, and ATRAC (traction control) will like the change. I don't like to compromise these electronic nannies because i believe in them to save lives.

I am sure that my drivetrain can handle 32-33" tires over the next 5-10 years, but i also know for sure that a bigger set of tire will undoubtedly increase stress on powertrain/drivetrain. I do drive a lot and put many miles on it...so, i just want to be sure. I am paranoid that way.:D (In almost a year, i have over 23,800 miles and counting.)

As you will see in the pictures (and movie!) this past weekend, my G-wagen handled some tough stuff with my wimpy 31" BFG tires. I went thru all obstacles that a lifted 1st gen 4runner (cool engine mods...3.4L V6 swap with TRD S/C) went thru...and made all of them with relative ease. Of course, i did come close to tipping over once...thank goodness for helping hands (literally) on the trail! :)

Oh and as for the 2nd set for off-roading only, G-wagens are notoriously difficult to fit an aftermarket rim! :frown: Actually, it's nearly impossible. Thus, i had to spend $$ just to get European 16" rims...MBUSA dealers won't sell them to me. I can only think of 4 rims that would fit on my G-wagen (18" AMG, stock 18", my 16" rims, and Borbet 16" rims). Nothing else fit...unless i find someone to customize one for me...and that's even more $$$$$.

So, i had to pick a rim and tire combo that would do everything well....

I have been watching this thread with amusement, but am calling BS now. You must have really looked hard for those rims, Tire Rack sells the 18" AMG rims $249 each and stocks them.

http://www.tirerack.com/upgrade_gar...enz&autoModel=G500&autoYear=2004&autoModClar=

Discount tire sells a rim for that car also.

Perhaps you should take your smack talking mouth somewhere where people really care. You talk a bunch of crap about how great your G500 is offroad and then post pictures of you driving down a gravel road. Guess what, I used to drive down roads like that all the the time in my lowered BMW.

Finally, for all the money you spent on a vehicle designed in the 1970's that is not even built by Mercedes, you think you could afford a camera that takes pictures in focus.

Yeah, all that and bag of chips gets you not one thing.

PS - My wife has my 100 and I drive her MB wagon!

Is this stupid thread still alive?

Maybe you all will let it die a peaceful death. This thread is an embarrassing pile of chit chat.

Thai,
Why are you here? I've never understood why people go onto vehicle specific forums when they don't have that vehicle and then try to convince everyone there that their vehicle is better. It's like shooting pool with a rope. Move along...

Perhaps you can tell me where to get 16" rims to fit my truck...since you're so smart and all. Why would i get AMG 18" rims when my car comes stock with 18" rims??!! I went with 16" rims BECAUSE it provides more tire selection especially when it comes to all-terrain tires (and cheaper too). There is no selection of BFG AT, Bridgestone Dueler REVO, or GY Wrangler Silent Armor in 18" stock size (since i don't want to screw with on-board electronics). Why are you even arguing with me on this one...HELLO, i have done my research on this...a quick internet search ain't gonna do it.

Gravel roads?? Well, why don't you ask people who have been to Colorado Passes if those places are "gravel roads"?? Do you have pictures of your lowered BMW over Poughkeepsie Gulch trail???!!! Thanks in advance for the pics.

Hmmm, your wife drives the cruiser?? Well, i guess that i know who has the balls in the household. :flipoff2: Do you cook and clean too?? Because if you do, maybe i can hire you cheap.

Don't forget those pictures you promised!!

Some of you put down and criticize other trucks...AND expect that no one challenges your assumptions (case in point, Touareg and G-wagen). And when someone actually comes here to defend it, you guys complain like spoiled little girls. Bitch and groan...blah, blah. Isn't that what this PUBLIC FORUM is all about?? Discussions, debates, etc.?? Yes, even sometimes, arguing about plus and minus of a truck. So, yeah, we're all retards here because we have all argued on a public forum at some point.

This is supposed to be fun and easy-going debate. I am not your typical troll because i actually respect TLC/LX platform. I am just supporting TLC (see page 3 of this thread) and defending my truck at the same time against false assumptions by some of you.

You're still a snippy little troll crying about your G-Wagon. :crybaby:

Dude, wake up. No one gives a s*** about it.

But please continue to write some more. You obviously love to hear yourself speak and I'm pretty slow at work today.

BFG makes a 285/65/18 or 33" tire for the 18". I believe you stated that you didn't want to compromise your driving on the road by using larger/more agressive tires all the time and didn't want to spend money on the rims. I am also sure that you can find 16" rims without to much trouble, I am not going to waste my time searching for you. Start with Bekkers.

Your concerns about the ESP and other electronic nanny's are unfounded. The only time that they have trouble is if you stagger tire diameter on a system that was not designed for stagger. All of those systems measure relative speed differences between wheels, larger tires do not change the relative speeds between the wheels.

Sorry, but I never stopped to take pictures when out on gravel roads, beaches, etc, in my old BMW. I didn't really think to much of it. Also, I never promised any pictures. Please do show me where I said that I had or would provide any.

As far as my wife, she has nothing to do with our discussion. It is none of your business, but she drives the LC because she takes our child and german shepard every day. They don't fit in her BMW. She would prefer to drive the BMW every day, I would prefer the LC, but logistics provide otherwise. Perhaps when you have children (assuming you can find a woman desperate enough) you will be able to comprehend the concept of putting others needs and safety before yours.

Concerning your other comments, you have completely overstepped the line. My family and relationship have nothing to do with this discussion. Quite frankly, if you made that comment to me in person, you would be looking around for the teeth that used to reside in your mouth. Obviously, you are not the most intelligent person going off and insulting someone that you do not know. You know nothing about who I am, what I do, or how I may respond.

The the world a favor and take your small dicked little self somewhere else. You are the classic internet troll, with nothing better to do. If I had to guess, I would bet that you don't even own your precious G-wagon, you just borrow mommy's car. Now go away.

Ahh, i did try Nittos All-terrain 285/60/18 prior to getting my 16" rims. They did not sit well with my ESP. It would light up when i make an aggressive corner. Thus, without much other option, i purchase 16" rims from Europe so that i can fit a more aggressive tire without sacrificing safety.

And no, Bekkers does not make a rim for G500. Feel free to prove me wrong...i would love to have another option...along with the rest of the G-wagen community. Educate me oh smart one.

Thanks for inquiring...my family and friends think that i am a caring person.

Cary, you cry about my comments above, YET you feel so confident to insult me and how i use my money in your post above??!! What goes around comes around, cAry. If you can't take it, then get out of the kitchen! :D

P.S.: If you don't like this thread, then just don't read it or put me on Ignore. It's simple.

Your original comment was there were not reasonably priced choices for alternative wheels. If you are having trouble with a 33" tire on an 18" rim, a 33" tire on a 16" wheel will make no difference, the tire is still the same diameter.

Did I inquire about your family and friends? No. You seem to have a reading comprehension problem and/or an overactive imagination. This is the second time you have claimed I made a statement that I have not. You consistantly change your position from post to post however.

Finally, you still are having trouble grasping the concept about making comments about my family. I said nothing about yours, I made reference to the poor quality of a photo posted above. I can handle myself just fine.

I'm done feeding you troll. Do yourself and the world a favor and go somewhere else where people might want you (I'm sure there is someone out there desperate). Apparently, the people on the board you started don't even want to hang out with you, so you have to resort to trolling other sites.

Finally, I guess from you lack of response, it really is mommy's car. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Oh yeah, it's a mommy's car alright. At least, I get to drive it!!:D Hahaha. Sorry, you're just too easy.

BTW, Cary, how would you like for me to prove it otherwise?? Show you my newly acquired title for my G-wagen?? I love the logic of some of you...first you accuse me of NOT having a G500 at all...until i show you pics of me off-roading in it...and then now, you accuse me of not actually buying/owning one.

Because of ESP issues (and related on-road safety), i have chosen to stay with stock sized tire but with all-terrain tires and on 16" rims...best compromise i can think of for my car...BTW, all of this was mentioned above many times. And you say that i have a reading comprehension problem??!!

You didn't want to debate the merits of the G vs. 100 publicly but now you do? This is the same old Thai crap. Troll your own forum, not this one.

Just got a fresh enima that put a spring in your step so you can troll some more? Don't dump your $hit here.

all right!
this is getting annoying...
and getting too personal, too...

do I hear opinions out there that I should can this thread?

I don't want to go back and read the beginning of the danged thing to look for archivally-worthwhile material... worth keeping or consign to the dustbin of history....?

Kill it and boot the offender off the forum. He obviously has nothing of value to contribute for Land Cruiser or even Toyota owners, which afterall is the point of this forum. Nothing I can remember is worth keeping for the archive.

I can't believe this thing is still alive. I think I mentioned somewhere back in the hazy history of this thread that the guy everyone seems annoyed with is one of those low-self-esteem types that simply must always have the last word and is always right (according to him). He's gotta make himself seem important because no one else does. So basically, you will never get him to shut up. He even contaced me via PM several times after I quit reading this thing and started filtered his posts. He wanted to continue the arguments even further! Definately a troll with nothing better to do.

Kill it man, and let us get on with our lives!
