Hey, noticed in todays Canadian Tire flyer a 1/2 " Mastercraft torque wrench for $47.99. What do you think? Will the quality be any good? Wondering how accurate it would be and is it good enough for a back yard, once in a while, mechanic? I use the term mechanic very loosely. Hope you monkey :wrench: could give an opinion.

Thanks for your input.

A torque wrench is the kind of tool that I don't mind spending a little more for. The idea is accuracy, that being said, it might be OK for the occasional use. For me, if it doesn't come in it's own case it's a cheap one.

Don't bother. Probably about the same quality as the Jet and Bulldog Tq wrenches my father has they are fall apart specials, also they don't feel completely accurate compared to my calibrated arm at lower settings.

The KD tools or Proto tq wrenches KMS tools sells are good value for the price.

I am kind of spoiled we have Snap-On and Proto @ the hangar. Snap-On are about $360 for a 3/8" drive and the range is not as wide as other brands. I have not bought one myself yet. Too much $$$$

Whichever brand I would recomend a "Click Type"

You can always take it back if you don't like it. Last one I bought was a Sears one at 1/2 price. It didn't work at all - just like a nice big breaker bar. Took it back and still have my old fashion needle torque wrench. I am sure after all these years it needs to be recalibrated. I might take a look at it and give this one a try.

The Cnd Tire ones are fine.

My torque wrenches have to be calibrated yearly for work(legal). So one year I tossed in my friends Cnd tire 1/2 tq wrench and it tested extremely well. Well with in limits to do a safe torque.

Two rules with torque wrenches; one, never ever use it in reverse. It will lose calibratiion. 2nd, akways return the setting to 0 afeter use. Or same problem occurs.

They need to be used gentle . No knocking them about. Or the calibration changes.

Go to KMS and you can find good quality at cheaper prices. Besides I would rather keep a local company in business over a Big Box outfit. Plus your C.C. membership gives a discount.

I picked up a 1/2" one yesterday. I works fine. I may even pic up a 3/8" one this week with about 6 years of CC money, if I can find were I stashed it all. :D

I am not all that thrilled with KMS. They can sell crap just like anyone else. I spent good money on a wire brush for my angle grinder last year. First time I used it was when I started cleaning the rims. It lasted only to do the front of three rims. Got one from Home Depot at half the price and it finshed the worst of the job off with little wear.

Funny how that goes with consumable tools. Sometimes the xpensive ones only are slightly better. Or not at all. Brand names screws with stuff.

I shop there too BB ,but most of the time I go where my C.C. memberships has its little percs. Nicer looking girls at KMS lol

Ah the girls always bring the customers back eh?

Only if they know what the hell they are doing. I've dealt with the pretty girls at KMS, Lordco and Canadian Tire. It is obvious why they are there because I have yet to run into one that has a clue about parts or tools.

Edit: The only problem with CC is that 9 times out of 10, know one there has a clue about parts or tools.
