Hello to all,
I would have loved to attend the SMORR event this weekend..........but pulling my kids out of school for us to attend is simply not an option. I know of 2 other familys that did not attend the event for the same reason. Is there any thought of having a TAC event that does not conflict with school? My kids are off June, July and most of August.
In the past, there was a concern that a TAC event during June/July or August would conflict with other TLCA events. When was the last time anyone attend a Tornado Alley event that was from West of Colorado? Who cares if it is the same weekend as the Rubithon....or River Shiver.....or anything that is over 500 miles away. I say make the event kid friendly and have it while they are not in school.
Any thoughts?

I'm in the same boat here. I know we've discussed a June event before. Only significant concern I recall was trying to work around Memorial Day and Father's Day. I also think at the time that Razorback Ramble's scheduled date of the 1st weekend in June played a part in it.

I wasn't able to attend and a big reason ended up being our kids MAP tests. I will tell you, though, if the truck didn't have a couple issues, we would have gone anyway, but the tests became one of a couple "final straws."

My kids are 13 and 9 now, so maybe it isn't as big of a deal - I would have a lot rather had cool weather vs hot.

Also - our summers are CRAZY compared to fall.

Just my 2 cents.

Since Elliot just started kindergarden this year is the first pulling a kid out of school has even been a question for me. I decided it wasn't going to negatively effect his school future and would be a good time for him and dad to spend some quality time together in nature (as it was, wet nature). That said, everyone has to make their own decisions on if they want to pull their kids out of school or not and it's no one else's place to judge that.

Picking a time for an event sucks - pure and simple. Do it in the summer it can be too hot. And many families are on vacation. Do it in the Fall or Spring and weather is spottier and kids are in school. Do it on a holiday weekend so people have more time off and kids are off and people have other plans and event locations are crowded.

We've run into this at work trying to do "Engagement Activities". Everyone gets in their mind that it's not engagement unless everyone can participate. Trying to get around a dozen peoples schedules who all work in the same department in the same building is a pain. Getting around everyone's schedule for a TLCA event is just impossible. Ran into that with GATOR couple years back. Someone is going to have a wedding, or a child being born, or a funeral, or have to work that weekend, or have a kid in school. You're simply not going to be able to accomodate everyone.

Our solution at work? Have more activities on a fairly regular bassis. That way even though everyone can't participate all the time, at least they can hit a percentage.

At least with TAC you have three wheeling events -

Spring Disney Run
Fall Crawl
Mike Sears Memorial Run

GCC has the Disney Picnic in October. That's the only organized wheeling event. If you miss that, you have to wait till next year.

There used to be a non-demoninational 4x4 club in Tulsa that had events every month. Their events were more of the "We're going here this month" than any organized here's your meal ticket and here's a raffle. It's different, but valid approach.

Couple of options for you -

1. Go anyway! Find some way of making it work. Can't take the kids out of school? They're done at 3:30, have everything loaded up ready to go and leave from school at 3:30. if you're within 4 hours of the event, that gets you there by 7:30. Too late to set-up camp? Eat the cost of a hotel room for 1 night. Or find someone else in the club who doesn't have you're constraints and send your tent with them - they can set it up for you (as helpful as the TAC folks are I can't imagine that at least one of them wouldn't be willing to do this) - when you get there it takes 5 min to toss sleeping bags in and go to sleep.

2. Convince everyone that June is better or that there are enough members to add a 4th event.

I have missed events due to kids in school too. It's a tough call. Event planning will always conflict with someone, that's the way it is. I think the important part is keeping open discussion and if the main event's date need to be changed to include greater numbers then change it. We could also have more day trip outings. They are easier on the budget and don't require as much planning. 2 more cents.

"Back in the day", like 10+ years ago, we tried to go wheeling once a month. Typically we went to Tuttle or Disney. Also, typically, the same 6 or so guys formed the group you could count on to be there.

That's changed as our lives changed. We need a new group of 6 to get this going again.

would that be like a super congress?

NO chris.. that changed when diesel hit $4 a gallon or more. when gas was $2 it was MUCh easier to go wheeling.

i always took jake out of school to attend the events we could...felt he would learn a heck of a lot more useful stuff hanging with the tac guys and gals for a long weekend!...jake did not suffer academically....he currently a 3.75 student and has learned so many valuable lessons about stuff...not to mention the chocolate chip pancakes that always seemed to be on the breakfast menu when he was there...i miss those weekends....school will be there for a lot of years...these opportunities may not.....now baseball was another story!...lol

Lots of good points. Bottom line is I am bummed out for not making it. I like the idea for a "Day" at Tuttle/KS Rocks/Disney. Maybe we should just throw a date out and run with it. I will look at the calendar and see. Thanks for listening to me whine!:)

If you just want a day at Disney - see the GCC invite - Oct. 8th is our picnic, and I"ve put out an invite for all the TAC folks.
