Did a transmission service recently and didn't feel like waiting two hours for regular FIPG material to set up so I tried some Permatex " The Right Stuff ".

Expensive - yes. Worth it - absolutely! Ready to fill tranny in 15 minutes. Just about the time it took to take the grill off, disconnect the return hose from the cooler and get the drain hose and measuring bucket set up.

Question in the back of my mind though is - what are the chances of causing a problem by using too much gasket material. " The Right Stuff " aerosol applicator tip runs a pretty large bead even when you go fast. I don't have any problems or leaks, but I did get more " Stuff " on the pan surface than necessary. A little bit squished out the sides when I reinstalled it which obviously means a little probably squished out inside the pan as well.

Anything to worry about? This stuff is supposed to be impervious to everything.

The morale of the story is to practice a few beads with the " The Right Stuff " before you start the finished project.

FYI - truck has 115K miles on it. There was no sludge in the pan. The filter was basically clean and it was hard to tell when the new ATF was coming out and the old gone. Drained and added 17 QT's of fluid. First full service other than drain and fill with pan in place ever. Had a heck of a time getting the pan off.

Hard to answer that question definitively other than to comment that it wouldn't take much of a flap of cured "right stuff" to get loose and seriously damage the tranny. I think your observation that excess squeezed onto the outside of the seam is reflective of what happened on the inside. The difference is the stuff on the outside can fall harmlessly onto the ground.

Dunno that I'd make the same choice you did to speed things up.

I would stop and redo the gasket bead if I had it to do over. I started to, but " The Right Stuff " material is already setting up the second it comes out of the can so I went forward instead of stopping.

As far as a " flap " of cured material coming loose - this stuff doesn't flap like regular gasket material when it gets squeezed - it beads. I could barely get the bead of fresh material off the outside of the pan. It was completely cured after five minutes.

I dunno - may drop the pan again and redo it just for peace of mind. Anybody else have experience with this gasket material?

If it's that tough, I wouldn't worry about it. Ironically a couple days ago I was helping a friend evaluate a Subaru wagon to purchase and noted that someone had the engine/tranny apart as there was fresh sealant squeezed out. I was amazed/appalled at how easily that stuff came off the outside. Doesn't matter there - it's a bell housing - but still...
