Hey guys, i need help i have been trying to find some tires and dont know what to get i am thinking 285/70/17. i ordered a 3 inch ome friday it will be here soon and now i need tires. i use my fj as a DD to and from school and work about 23 miles one way. i need something i can depend on in mud and also something that will last. can i get some help from yall.

BFG muds work good, however if driving that much you may want a AT tire, the BFG KO'S seem to work pretty well... i run the toyo AT and they seem to be good as well...

had toyos on my z71 i traded for the fj. liked thim but i want something else. bht bfg is to common on fjcs i mean i like them just everyone is runin them. is that because its best or just to do it? how does the nitto do?

Nitto are great tires...I am not too sold on their MudTerrain but I love their Terra Grappler. They are more aggressive than BFG AT in my opinion....have some side lugs....and a good profile. I do not find them noisy on the highway and they wear great.

I had them on my last truck and just stuck a set on my new FJ...

Here are the Nitto Terra Grapplers 295x70x17

I have been running Bridgestone Revo's and have great results using them. They do well in mud (although not as good as a true mud tire) and snow. I live in an area where we get alot of rain and so far I have not experienced any hydroplaning. I did have 285/70/17 and then I bought some TRD 16" alloys. I upgraded the tires to 285/70/16 and these are "D" rated and have much heavier lugs than the 17's did.

I think I misspoke about the tire I size I am now running on my FJ. I did have 285/70/17 and now have 285/75/16 using Bridgestone Revo's. Sorry about that!

Ran BFG AT KOs for 30K on my FJ and on my chevy 4x4 before - I was not happy with them all in all. Both vehicles were DDs and used offroad - altho the Chevy not nearly as aggressively as the Toyota.

I switched to Nitto's and so far am pleased with them. Ran several moderately difficult trails and the performed well, tho no real mud, and 3K miles on the street and they have given me at 3/4 - 1-1/4 mpg improved performance over the BFG's. - Oh and I went from 285/70/17 to 315/75/16's.

So you wont get a tire because alot of other people are running them?
Thats just plain silly.

Get whatever tire YOU want/need.

Has your speedo been ajusted for the bigger tire size? Simply going from 285 to 315 sized tires can make it look like you are getting better gas milage when in fact you may actually be getting worse.

I'm with White_Boy7690 on this one. Don't be a sheep. The whole point of the FJ is to take the path less traveled.

I am all for being a little different if you can find quality items elsewhere and many times for less money due to not being as "popular" hence why I now go with Nitto Terra Grapplers...I feel they are better tire for a good bit less money.

Maybe also why I do a lot of things I do....LOL....damn rebellious nature I guess...wonder I made a career out of military for 21 years. LOL

Actually just the opposite - the larger tire indicates less mileage on the odometer. The correction over stock 265/70/17 is about 9% and I use that factor as a multiplier in calculating mpg. I'm actually seeing slightly better mileage on the clock with the Nittos.

I never once bought something as important as tires and thought to myself,
or out loud on a public forum,

"Gee I hope my truck looks cool and not like alot of others"

I buy parts/tires based on performance not looks and how many people are using them.
Its your choice. You should make it.

I like my BFG AT's that came with the TRD package. Sure they don't do as well off-road as some others, but I have yet to have to be pulled out of anything, and they work better on the freeway then any off-road or AT tires I've had in the past. I'll probably get something else though once I ware these ones out.

Blues Dawg - you're right, I was thinking backwards. I tend to do that sometimes. I just wanted to make sure you were adjusting for tire size.
